Matthews has cup desire ahead of Wimborne Town showdown
By Dorset ECHO

Tuesday 28th February 2017

WEYMOUTH player-manager Jason Matthews expressed his desire to progress to the final of the Dorset Senior Cup when his side host Wimborne Town in the last four tonight (7.45pm).

The Terras, who are looking for a hat-trick of county crowns under Matthews, are the highest ranked side left in the competition after Southern League South & West outfit Wimborne knocked out Poole Town in the previous round.

But Matthews, whose side are cemented in mid-table in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division, will not be taking the Cuthbury club lightly and has underlined his eagerness to salvage some silverware from what has been a frustrating league campaign.

He told Echosport: “We have done well in the other cups we have been in this year and I would like to win this one.

“I would love to win it for a third time and it gives you some silverware.

“We will be going into it strongly and won’t underestimate Wimborne in any shape or form.”

While he is set to use the majority of his first-team squad for the encounter, Matthews indicated that midfielder Billy Lowes, who had a short spell at Wimborne on loan in January, will feature.

The Terras’ boss added: “I feel I have a good squad of 16 players and some deserve their chance after some of the performances on Saturday anyway.”

Gillingham Town, who Weymouth beat in last year’s final, host Swanage Town & Herston in the other semi-final clash tonight (7.45pm).
