FORMER Weymouth manager Brian Godfrey has passed away at the age of 69, following a long battle with leukaemia.

Godfrey was the Terras’ manager between November 1983 and April 1987 and guided the south coast club to fifth position in the Gola League in the 1985-1986 season.

He had plenty of success in the transfer market, bringing the likes of Andy Townsend, Tony Agana and Steve Claridge to the club.

“He was a decent guy, was softly spoken and only raised his voice when he had to,” said Claridge. “He was experienced at what he did, never went up or down, and it’s very sad news.

“It’s not a coincidence that the club had a fantastic time under him and brought through some fantastic players.

“As a manager, if you can spot a good player it doesn’t do you any harm.

“I’ll always be thankful that he gave me the chance to go to Weymouth, where I had a fantastic time.”

Godfrey carved out a successful playing career as an inside forward and featured for Everton, Scunthorpe United, Preston North End, Aston Villa, Bristol Rovers, Newport County and Bath City in a career spanning 20 years.

He also won three caps for Wales and scored two goals before management stints at Bath City, Exeter City, Weymouth and most recently Gloucester City – a club he was assistant-manager at until 2001.
