GARRY Hill has expressed his dismay after being sacked by
Terras chairman Martyn Harrison.
The Conference South champions have parted company with the
former Dagenham & Redbridge manager while vying for promotion
to the Football League.
The Terras are in seventh position in the top tier of non-League
football, one point off the play-offs and had looked set to
launch an assault on the Conference title this season with
four signings lined-up.
However, yesterday afternoon, Hill and his assistant Kevin
Hales were called to a meeting with Harrison where they were
informed of the club's restructuring. Hill said: "I am
stunned - I loved it at Weymouth.
"I am shell-shocked. We have been informed that our
services are no longer required and I find that very surprising."
Hill was appointed in March 2005, taking over from Steve
Johnson, who lasted just four months in the job. Both Hill
and Hales extended their contracts at the Wessex Stadium in
November to run until 2010 but they did not reach their second
anniversary at the club.
"This club hadn't been in the Conference for 17 years
until this season. Last year was my first season and we got
promoted," said Hill.
`As things stand we are only one point off the play-offs
and we have only lost three times at home in my time at the
club."
The Terras were due to fly out to Alicante, Spain for a three-day
break and Hill said there was no indication of trouble ahead
as the players and staff had always been paid on time.
"Take nothing away from the chairman, he's been very
good to me and Kevin Hales and the players," added Hill.
"It is Martyn Harrison's club and it is his right to
do with it what he likes - and I don't feel any bitterness
towards him.
"The chairman is in charge of the club and he wants
to take the club a different way."
The Terras chief executive Gary Calder refused to comment
on the situation, pointing to a press conference which was
due to be held at 11am today.
Harrison was unavailable for comment, but in a statement
on the club's website said the changes were being implemented
as a conequence of an on-going review
"It will be a painful time for us as it is likely that
there will be changes in the squad as well as some personnel,"
said Harrison. "I appreciate the irony of these changes
coming at a time when we are enjoying success but it is imperative
that achievements are delivered in a sustainable manner."
