Wessex return is just Taylor-made

FOREST hero Gareth Taylor praised Weymouth after his two goals knocked his former side out of the FA Cup last night.

The striker, whose career was kick, started following ,a loan spell with the Terras in 1993, returned from a three-match suspension to net a second half double at the Wessex Stadium.

But the former Sheffield United star insisted Garry Hill's brave outfit should not be downhearted.

He told Echosport: "Weymouth gave it a right good go both tonight and at the City Ground and they can be extremely proud of their efforts.

"I guess the old adage of an old player coming back to haunt a former club has come true again but I take no joy in knocking Weymouth out of the cup.

"While I'm just pleased and relieved Forest got through, Weymouth showed they are a good side who can certainly go on to bigger and better things.

"They were solid, made life extremely hard for us and it was only when we got our second goal that the game was killed off.

"The atmosphere was superb and seeing the Wessex Stadium packed out was nice to see.

"It's been a long time since I played here but it was certainly nice to be back and even nicer to score a couple of gpals, especially on my return from suspension.

"I've got a lot of good memories from my time here, Weymouth were a big help when I was starting, and I wish them all the best for the rest of the Confenmce South season."

Taylor came out on top of a titanic tussle with Terras skipper Matt Bound, a former team-mate of Taylor's at Southampton.

"Matt is a strong defender who makes life very hard for you as a striker and I knew we would have quite a battle," he said.

"I've played against him a few times in the past and each occasion has been hard work for me.

"We're planning to stay in touch and will certainly go out, have a beer and compare bruises after this one."

Jason Matthews narrowly missed out on becoming the FA Cup Player of the Round winner.

The Terras goalkeeper, whose saves at the City Ground helped earn last night's first round replay, came third after polling 28 per cent of the 47,000 votes cast.

Northwich Victoria's Paul Brayson scooped the award and a VIP place at this season's final by securing 32 per cent of the vote.

Also ahead of Matthews was Colchester United's Mark Yeates with 29 per cent.
