Games in Ireland will test Terras
By Paul Baker
Saturday 9th July 2005
WEYMOUTH chief executive Gary Calder has told his players
to expect no favours during their pre-season tour of Ireland.
The Terras fly out to the Emerald isle tomorrow where they
play two games against Eircom League of Ireland Premier Division
opposition.
On Monday, they take on Drogheda while on Wednesday they
and a travelling band of about 40 supporters will be in Dublin
to face Shamrock Rovers.
"We're looking forward to it immensely," said Calder
who, with manager Garry Hill took a Hornchurch side on a similar
excursion last summer. "The Irish teams are in the middle
of their campaigns and so they certainly won't be in the mood
to take things lightly against us.
"What both Drogheda and Shamrock will be are strong,
competitive and very fit and it's the perfect couple of fixtures
to get our pre-season programme off and running." Despite
only returning to training this week, Calder says the squad
is already shaping up well and he's delighted with what he's
seen so far.
He explained: "Training has gone really well with the
boys having been working really hard from Monday through to
yesterday. We've been up at Redlands where the facilities
are fantastic and I can't thank the staff up there enough
for all their help this week.
"Everyone has gone home today to spend some time with
their family and we'll be meeting up tomorrow to fly to our
base in Dublin. We'll train tomorrow night and then every
day until we return on Thursday, and we've got the two games
to look forward to as well.
"It should be a great trip both from a team bonding point
of view and in terms of getting us right for the start of
the season and hopefully we can return with a couple of results.
"We've got about 30 or 40 fans travelling which just
shows how big Weymouth Football Club is and I'm sure they'll
enjoy their time over there as well."
Calder said that the entire Terras squad will be flying out
tomorrow, along with trialist Shaun Carey:
"Everyone is coming," he added, "and everyone
will get some football under their belts."
