Calder cheer at Taggart swoop
By Matt Pitman
Tuesday 14th June 2005
TERRAS today clinched the signing of Farnborough Town player
of the year Tony Taggart.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who starred for the relegated
Conference National side last term, moves to the Wessex Stadium
on a one-year contract.
The deal caps a flurry of transfer activity at Radipole Lane
following the signings of Cardiff City goalkeeper Arran Lee-Barrett,
Shrewsbury defender Trevor Challis and Chester City midfielder
Andy Harris.
Chief executive Gary Calder today spoke of his delight at
securing the highly-rated Taggart who has also had stints
at Brentford and Barnet.
"Tony won nearly all Farnborough's player of the year
awards last season and impressed in what was a struggling
side," said Calder.
"He is someone who was highly-thought of at Farnborough,
with experience at Football League level with Brentford, and
we're delighted he has decided to join us.
"One of Tony's main attributes is his versatility -
he is equally at home playing down the left wing and at left
back.
"It's important we have a strong squad next season and
Tony's arrival helps us achieve that. He gives the manager
Garry Hill more competition for places when the squad turn
full-time early next month."
Boss Hill, currently enjoying a break in Portugal, added:
"Tony's quick, versatile, and has a good left-foot. The
best thing about him is that he can play anywhere along the
left and provides competition with Trevor Challis for the
left back spot."
With fans' favourite Steve Tully back at the club after a
short stint at Exeter City, bookies make Weymouth strong favourites
to win the Conference South title next season.
But Calder today warned the Terras spree of summer signings
might not be over yet. High on Hill's shopping list is a new
striker - with Peterborough United's Wayne Purser linked with
a move.
"We're always looking to strengthen the squad at any
time and as a team we know what is required to win this division,"
said Calder.
"We've already secured the signings of five players
but we're still talking to other players and hopefully we
can strengthen even further in time for the start of the season."
