Victorious Terras may appeal after sending off

WEYMOUTH boss Steve Johnson will study video evidence before deciding whether to appeal against Jason Matthews' sending off at Bishop's Stortford.

The visiting goalkeeper was shown a red card after only 15 minutes for handling the ball outside his penalty box.

But despite playing most of the game with ten men, the Terras stormed to a magnificent 2-0 victory thanks to goals in each half by Roy O'Brien and Kirk Jackson.

Johnson said: "To lose Jason so early was a real hammer blow and I was forced to bring off Kieron Keene and send on substitute keeper Francisco Ramos. I thought we would be really up against it but the boys have turned in a wonderful display after that.

"We switched to two banks of four and left Kirk Jackson up front on his own and he did the job of two men for the rest of the game.

"The character and team spirit was amazing and what was really pleasing was the hard work that's been put in on the training pitch is really paying dividends in terms of fitness and physique."

He added: "The sending off was a bit harsh. Jason's come out of his box and tried to chest it and I couldn't see whether he handled it or not.

But he definitely wasn't the last man because Mark Boyce was behind him and so it was a little bit suspect to me.

"Fortunately the game was being filmed and so we'll be getting a copy of the video to look at.

If I feel that Jason has been hard done by then we'll definitely be appealing."

The victory at Woodside Park sends the Terras up to eighth in the Conference South table, just two places outside the play-off zone.

"We're on a good little run at the moment," said Johnson, "and can honestly say I'm proud of the lads' efforts on Saturday.

But it will all go to waste if we don't keep the momentum going, especially with a couple of home games coming up.

"I'm convinced we can win automatic promotion from this league and the Christmas and New Year period is vital in terms of that.

In three weeks time we could be right up there inthe promotion mixer and that has got to be the aim.

"It's now beginning to resemble my team out there on the park and they are starting to play the way I want them to play.

Steve Clarke's another lad brought in from Hornchurch and I thought he did really well on his debut.

"In turn, the boys are now beginning to believe in me which is crucial and I hope the fans can see what I'm trying to do.

The were magnificent again at Bishop's like they have been since I arrived at the club and this result is for them and chairman Martyn Harrison."

Meanwhile Matthews wasn't the only visitor to clash with the officials in Essex - Johnson himself got a warning from the linesman after celebrating Jackson's 85th minute goal.

He explained: "When that one went in I went a bit mad with my celebrations and before I knew it I was dancing and jumping about in the centre circle.

"Suddenly the linesman appeared and asked me to get off the pitch and to be honest I hadn't quite realised I'd wandered that far.

"But that's the way I am.

I'm passionate about Weymouth and wear my heart on my sleeve and I'll continue to do so."
