Rico earns Magpies cup cheer
By Adam Summers
THE Magpies gained the local bragging rights in a one-sided
Dorset Senior Cup second round tie at the Bob Lucas Stadium
last night.
Weymouth registered just one shot on target throughout the whole
90 minutes and were eventually punished in the second half through
a goal from Rico Wilson.
Both teams predictably made wholesale changes in a bid to give
their regular first-teamers a welcome break following a busy
schedule of games.
Tom Manley returned from suspension and began between the posts
as skipper for the Terras, who also handed starts to new-signing
Chris Luke, Jamie Frampton, Mitch Conning, Richard Marshallsay,
Ryan McKechnie and Jamie Beasley.
Meanwhile, the Magpies included Aldershot Town loanee Adam Mekki
in their line-up along with Gary Bowles, Steve Devlin, Chris
Flood and regular number one Alan Walker-Harris, who donned
the captains armband On paper Town looked a lot stronger
than the hosts and it showed in the opening exchanges with Wilson
and Mekki both going close to opening the scoring in the first
10 minutes.
Wilson hit the crossbar after seeing his initial effort blocked
at point-blank range by Manley before Mekki let fly with a 30-yarder
which flew just wide of a post.
The frantic pace of the game continued but the Magpies still
looked the more likely side to break the deadlock with their
former player Frampton being forced into a last-ditch intervention
to deny Ryan Dovell on 26 minutes.
The Terras were working hard but offering very little in attack
and moments later they dodged another bullet when Flood turned
Frampton with ease, only to see his prodded effort rebound off
the far post.
Jamie Symes then sent two more attempts just wide of the target
as Dorchester continued to probe for a breakthrough without
success with Wilson also seeing a shot on the turn blocked by
Manley towards the end of the half.
Towns dominance carried on after the break with Bowles
testing Manley again with a header but as the second period
drew on they appeared to start running out of ideas.
And with the hosts still looking toothless up front at the other
end it made for a pretty drab spectacle until Wilson finally
tapped home the opener the visitors deserved with 13 minutes
remaining following a swift break down the left.
Mekki then struck the woodwork with a fine half-volley before
Devlin shot wide from 20 yards and Wilson headed over from eight
yards as the Magpies immediately went in search for a killer
second.
But in truth they were never going to need it as the hosts managed
to test Walker-Harris just once in added-time when Winspers
free-kick was comfortably pushed clear.
The hosts even gave a run outfield to reserve-team keeper Chris
Povall with five minutes remaining, which was perhaps an indication
of just how low the Senior Cup was in their list of priorities.
For the holders Dorchester though, it was another small step
in the right direction as they continue to try and rediscover
some momentum following the recent sacking of first-team manager
Ashley Vickers.
