Terras ground Bluebirds to bag first win of season
By Dill Butcher
WEYMOUTHS wait for an Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division
win ended at the fourth time of asking as second half goals
from Rob Wolleaston and hot-shot Warren Byerley ensured three
well-earned points for Brendon Kings men.
The Terras went into last nights clash with only one point
to show for their efforts after three difficult opening games,
but a determined rearguard action saw them weather an onslaught
from Town early in the second period before the cleanest of
drives from Wolleaston and a late free-kick from Byerley clinched
a vital victory.
An equally relieved and delighted boss Brendon King was suitably
upbeat in his assessment as he said: It was important
we ground out a win tonight as the result was always going to
be more important than the performance.
That said, the way we played tonight we will win more
than we lose if we can maintain that level of discpline, shape
and work-rate.
We will take all the plusses from tonight and work on
the things we didnt do so well in training before another
home game on Saturday.
One minutes silence was impeccably observed prior to kick-off
to honour former Terra Roger Brown and Flight Lieutenant Jon
Egging from the Red Arrows.
On the pitch Ollie Tribe and Richard Marshallsay returned to
the starting line-up in place of Thomas Lang and Ryan McKechnie
who took up places on the bench while skipper Ben Gerring missed
out again through suspension.
Although starting at a frantic pace both sides took time to
settle and in the opening 10 minutes the only time either goal
was threatened was when a Stephen Reed corner flashed across
goal but eluded everyone just two minutes in.
Moments later Weymouths front pairing of Matt Groves and
Warren Byerley were left frustrated as they each left Reeds
tantalising through ball for each other while, at the other
end, new loan signing Tim Stephen-son made a terrific recovery
tackle after losing possession on the left side of his own goal
area to Jack Pitcher.
The first attempt on target did not arrive until the 20th minute
and then Reeds free-kick to the near post was easily held
by keeper Will Puddy seconds before Lewis Powells snapshot
failed to trouble Weymouth stopper Nick Jordan as it flew hopelessly
high and wide.
The chances remained at a premium as Byerley was outmuscled
when trying to get his head on the end of another Reed free-kick
but there was a let-off for the hosts when James Guthries
low driven centre skidded virtually along the goal-line before
going out on the far side.
Byerley had a shout for a penalty turned down on the half hour
but it was pretty poor fayre in terms of goalmouth action although
Reed did find the keepers arms again with a looping volley
when neatly teed up by Groves.
However the first real sight on goal for either side finally
arrived just five minutes after the restart but luckily for
the napping hosts Jordan came to his sides rescue as he
pulled off a first class point blank save to deny Lewis Powell
who was put clean through.
The Bluebirds remained on the front foot and they squandered
two more decent chances.
Firstly Jack Pitcher rose to head a near post Aaron Wilson free-kick
just wide of the left-hand post seconds before Toby Osman sent
Pitcher through but the striker contrived to dribble a harmless
shot horribly wide when well placed.
If home fans were growing anxious their nerves were quickly
settled in the 62nd minute as Rob Wolleaston gobbled up their
first opportunity of the half.
A slick move ended with Byron Napper flicking in Wolleaston
who found himself clean through and, steadying himself, he unleashed
the cleanest of strikes from 15 yards to beat Puddy all ends
up.
The impressive Jordan then had to tip away a dangerous James
Gurthre corner but the Terras then ended the game in command
as Reed let fly with a free-kick that whistled just wide of
the left-hand upright.
And then, five minutes from time, Byerley wrapped up the points
when his speculative free-kick flew through the wall and, to
the delight of the home fans, squirmed between the hapless Puddys
legs and just over the line.
