Eagles pick off woeful Terras
By Dill Butcher

WEYMOUTH failed to follow their manager’s script and were duly punished midway through a lacklustre second half after defender Sam Poole was dismissed for bundling over James Faulkner.

Striker Drew Roberts capitalised fully from that incident by converting the penalty and he then rubbed salt into Weymouth wounds within two minutes – wrapping up the points with a classy free-kick as the Eagles soared to a comfortable vic-tory. Afterwards Terras’ boss Brendon King was most disappointed by the fact his players had not kept to the intended game plan.

He said: “We were looking to put a little run together but we got what we deserved – nothing.

“We were looking to play balls in behind them to open them up but we just didn’t execute that enough.

“Too many haven’t performed and we showed no quality on the ball even in the second half when we had the wind in our favour for getting balls in behind them.”

Before kick-off however, the Ter-ras, buoyant after tasting victory for the first time this term with a 2-0 home triumph over Chippenham in mid-week, were looking to field a virtually unchanged side.

There was one enforced change however as Tom Lang came in at right-back for the unavailable Ollie Tribe while Warren Byerley kept the captain’s armband in the continued absence of suspended Ben Gerring.

The only other switch saw Kyle Bassett handed his first start in preference to assistant-boss Matt Groves who took up a place on the bench. And Weymouth began well enough, shading the opening ex-changes with the first chance of the game falling to Bassett in the very first attack.

Stephen Reed’s free-kick was partially headed clear but Bassett was on hand to flick an effort goalwards with the outside of his right boot but it failed to trouble Ian Brown in the visitors’ goal. Moments later Reed’s corner to the back-post saw Tim Stephenson stretch as high as he could but ultimately he could not get high enough to direct a header on target.

At the other end Town’s first attempt of the game fell to James Faulkner but his shot on the turn flew high and wide just before Bassett made himself space for his second attempt of the game – a 20-yard left-footer that was well gathered by Brown.

Then, on 19 minutes, Bassett turned provider as he stretched to hook a ball towards skipper Warren Byerley who, chaperoned by two defenders, could not get any real purchase on a header.

There remained little between the sides throughout a somewhat luke-warm first period that saw occasional half-chances at either end.

In the 21st minute Poole came to the rescue as he quickly snuffed out the danger posed by the marauding Faulkner who was in full flow and about to pull the trigger towards Jordan’s goal.

Moments later Lewis Tasker and then Reed tried their luck from range but the former dragged his drive just wide while Reed fired straight down the keeper’s throat from Rob Wolleaston’s short free-kick.

The Terras then conjured their best chance of the half in the 37th when Poole rose highest to Wolleaston’s left-side corner but his header was hacked off the line inside the back post by an alert defender.

The visitors though really should have gone in front five minutes later as they carved out the clearest opening of the game and but for Jordan’s heroics in the home goal it would have been 1-0 at the break.

Gareth Price got free down the right flank and he drove in a pinpoint centre for Faulkner whose header from point-blank range was miraculously saved by Jordan who spread himself to pull off a top-drawer block.

The game was starting to turn a little nasty in the run-up to the interval and referee Alan Bird was forced to dig deep into his pocket on four occasions to book three Eagles and Reed who was cautioned for ungentlemanly conduct.

During the break Weymouth fans would no doubt have been hoping for a repeat of Tuesday night’s game when the hosts came to life in a decent second period but, sadly, it was the Eagles who showed the greater intent during the early exchanges of the second 45.

Seven minutes in and Lang pulled off a smart tackle at the expense of a corner to thwart Roberts who found himself bearing down on goal and there were further warn- ing alarms sounding moments later.

It was another real let-off as tricky Manny Richardson glided through the home defence before smacking a toe-punter inches wide of the right-hand upright.

The Terras tried to respond but even Wolleaston appeared well short of his standards as he showed with a woeful attempted pull-back that went nowhere near a claret shirt.

The former Chelsea man did get a snapshot on target when teed up by Bassett but that was easily held by Brown and it was clear that Town looked more likely to break the deadlock as they were showing far more threat going forward.

The breakthrough, when it came, could not have been better for Bedford or worse for Weymouth.

A neat through ball behind the defence by Richardson caught out Poole who was struggling to contain Faulkner who was slipping from his shackles when the lanky centre-back was obliged to bundle him over for a clear penalty.

The only debate would be what colour card referee Bird would brandish and, rather unluckily for Poole, he produced the red one and the Terras would have to play with 10 men for the last 20 minutes.

As Poole trudged off Roberts powered his spot-kick past Jordan and it was looking all too bleak as the same man set himself to strike a free-kick on the left-hand corner of the home area barely two minutes later.

From 20 yards out Roberts found the top left-hand corner of the net with an equally emphatic finish and the match was all but over for the Terras inside three frantic minutes.

In the 85th minute the Eagles nearly made it 3-0 after a poor clearance from Jordan was picked up by Price and his eventual low centre was just missed on the stretch by Ollie Thorne.

And then in injury time Reed fired a last-ditch free-kick hopelessly over the top to sum up Weymouth’s frustrations.
