Terras put on five-star Spencer show
By Adam Summers
CRAIG Duff and Warren Byerley both netted doubles as Weymouth
recorded a fourth away win on the spin at the Spencer Stadium.
Sam Malsom also found the target for the Terras who looked the
better side throughout despite Banbury midfielder Glenn Walker
having momentarily pulled it back to 1-1 in the first half.
For the third game in succession, King named an unchanged starting
XI but only after a scare before kick-off, which saw Ben Gerring,
Malsom and Duff all arrive late after the car they were travelling
in suffered a puncture.
The trio reached the ground with just 10 minutes to spare giving
them very little time to warm up with Gerrings inclusion
in the side a bit of a surprise after receiving a club suspension
earlier in the week.
Sean Lillington, King and Mitch Conning replaced Chris Povall,
Ryan Murray and Ryan McKechnie on the Terras bench.
Coming into the game off the back of conceding 13 goals in four
straight defeats, the Puritans were clearly keen to make a good
start in front of their own fans but despite their far from
ideal preparations the Terras threatened first on five minutes
when Malsom sent a 30-yarder just wide of the target.
The ex-Plymouth Argyle man, who is currently in talks with the
club over a permanent contract, was certainly showing no signs
of fatigue from his eventful car journey and just seven minutes
later he tested home keeper Andy Kemp with a low drive after
evading a couple of challenges.
After just one defeat in their previous seven games, Weymouth
were predictably looking full of confidence but moments later
United hit back with a free-kick from Ryan Howell, which just
cleared the crossbar as the game began to even out.
Despite Banburys endeavour though, the visitors still
looked the more potent side and on 20 minutes they took the
lead when Duff nodded in a wonderful cross from Stephen Reed.
It was no more than the Terras deserved for such a bright opening
but just eight minutes later they nearly threw all the good
work away when they allowed Will Green to get to the by-line
and cut the ball back to Aaron Woodley, whose strike was saved
at point-blank range by Manley.
It was a lucky escape for Weymouth and they instantly responded
with Byerley rounding Kemp at the other end, only to be stopped
in his tracks by a tremendous last-ditch tackle by a covering
defender.
Banbury then compounded that intervention with a scrappy equaliser
on 36 minutes that was forced home by Walker.
For the first time in the game Weymouth were beginning to look
slightly edgy but after Green had an effort ruled out for offside,
Kings men regained their lead on 42 minutes with Duff
on target yet again.
This time Reed whipped over a fine free-kick and when Gerring
sent it back across goal there was the in-form midfielder to
head in from just six yards out.
Banbury looked stunned and three minutes later they found themselves
3-1 down with Malsom curling a delightful shot into the bottom-left
corner of the net from the edge of the box after Matt Groves
initial effort had been blocked.
It was a stunning climax to the half and the visitors were keen
to keep up the momentum after the break with Gerring forcing
Kemp into a decent save from another excellent free-kick from
Reed.
With time slowly ebbing away Banbury then began to get frustrated
with Ben Polk receiving a booking for a crude challenge on Malsom
on the hour.
The wind was also beginning to pick up causing the play to become
a lot scrappier with Groves being blocked out twice during another
threatening Weymouth attack.
Green then saw a header punched away by Manley before a trademark
run and pass from Beasley set up Byerley, who chipped the ball
over Kemp to grab his side a killer fourth with just 10 minutes
remaining.
To their credit, Banbury responded with Walker volleying just
over the bar but they continued to look ragged at the back and
on 89 minutes they paid the price again.
This time substitute Conning provided the pinpoint cross for
Byerley to fire home from six yards to bring up the Terras
biggest away victory in a league encounter since January 2001
when the club hammered Ilkeston Town 6-1. |
