Stags sunk by super Sam
By Adam Summers

SAM Malsom struck a hat-trick as Weymouth welcomed the New Year in style with a fine victory over high-flying AFC Totton at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The fleet-footed forward, who partnered Warren Byerley up front, opened the scoring after just two minutes thanks to some charitable goalkeeping from Grant Porter before going on to add two more after half-time.

It was another fine all-round performance from the Terras who are now sitting in 10th spot in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier, eight points adrift of the play-offs.

James Coutts and Matt Groves both made way for Ollie Tribe and Lewis Tasker for Weymouth.

Coutts, on loan from Totton, was not given permission to face his parent club while Groves dropped to the bench.

There were also two former Terras in the visitors’ ranks with Ryan Hill starting at right back and Matt Oldring named amongst the substitutes.

Driving rain and a swirling wind greeted kick-off and within two minutes the hosts were ahead thanks to a gift from Grant Porter.

There appeared to be no danger when the visiting keeper received the ball but his weak clearance went straight to Malsom who gleefully tucked the ball into an open net.

Totton looked stunned but they immediately tried to make amends with Michael Charles heading over a free-kick from Michael Gosney.

It was a cracking start to the game and with the blustery conditions eventually easing it looked like a classic was on the cards.

Weymouth defender Sam Poole made a fine last-ditch challenge to stop Nathaniel Sherborne racing through on 12 minutes before the Totton forward then struck wide from the edge of the box after the home side had struggled to clear their lines from a corner.

Since the early breakthrough it was the Stags that were looking the more threatening side with Charles firing another effort across the face of goal just moments later following some slack marking at a throw-in.

The Terras were still carrying a threat on the break though and on 24 minutes a fine run and cross from Malsom caused Porter to make a timely intervention at the feet of Byerley to parry the ball away.

Byerley then headed over from close range at the resulting corner as Weymouth continued to put the Totton stopper under pressure from set pieces in a bid to try and unnerve him even more after his earlier error.

Stephen Reed was once again at the heart of the Terras’ best moves and moments later he left fly from 25 yards only to see his strike just clear the crossbar.

Visiting centre-back Nathan Campbell then did well to clear a dangerous header from Craig Duff from inside his own six-yard box before Sherborne raced on to an under-hit back-pass from Alex Jeannin, only to be blocked out by home keeper Nick Jordan.

It was now end-to-end stuff with Poole ghosting in at the far post and seeing a volley from Reed’s corner turned over by Porter and Jordan making another fine save at the feet of Carl Pettefer.

The half then eventually came to a climax with a free-flowing move from the Terras which ended with Malsom playing in Byerley whose shot beat Porter but went agonisingly wide of the far post.

Both teams continued in the same manner after the break but it was the Terras that were asking more of the questions.

Byron Napper shot over the top from the edge of the area before Byerley backpedalled and headed wide from eight yards following another pinpoint corner from Reed.

Weymouth were turning up the heat and after Stefan Brown had nodded an effort into Jordan’s arms at the other end, the hosts doubled their advantage on 55 minutes.

Warren Byerley did well to get his cross in from the right and when Jamie Whisken failed to clear at the near post there was Malsom to tap the ball home from six yards.

Hill immediately responded with a 30-yard blockbuster from a free-kick which Jordan somehow held but the Terras continued to look in control.

However, the Hampshire outfit kept going and on 73 minutes they nearly broke through when a misjudgement by Jordan saw Gosney’s speculative free-kick cannon a post.

Substitute Jonathan Davies then tested the home stopper again before Malsom raced on to a through ball from Byerley and bagged his third with a minute remaining after rounding Porter.

There was still time for Charles to nod home a consolation in added-time but not even that could take any gloss off what was another great afternoon for the Terras.
