Terras Held
By Adam Summers
FOR the second Zamaretto Premier Division game in succession
a hard-working Weymouth side failed to register at the Bob Lucas
Stadium last night.
The Terras, who also drew 0-0 in their opening game at Halesowen
Town last Saturday, showed plenty of endeavour but lacked
the quality in the final third to break the deadlock despite
a lively performance by substitute Warren Byerley, who twice
went close in the second half.
Swindon Supermarine looked by far the more dangerous side
in the first half, going close through ex-Terras duo Jamie
Gosling and Chris Allen, but after the break it was an even
contest with a point apiece being a fair result at the final
whistle.
Ian Hutchinson made one change to his side with Jamie McGuinness
replacing Bradley Magookin on the right of midfield but in
an open start to the match it was the visitors who applied
some early pressure with Nick Stanley firing just wide of
the near post.
It was clear the Terras were struggling to settle and on
22 minutes another long-range strike from Stanley found the
net following a wicked deflection, which completely wrong-footed
home keeper Tom Manley.
However, to the home sides relief, referee Chris Wade
ruled it out, deeming the ball had ricocheted off a Supermarine
players hand.
Manley then made two solid stops to deny Allen and Gosling
as the away outfit continued to grow in confidence, which
was in sharp contrast to Weymouth, who were finding it hard
to get out of their own half. But then, on 32 minutes, a fantastic
break down the right saw the Terras create their first opportunity.
Skipper Simon Radcliffe picked out Jules Emati-Emati, who
had made a superb burst into the box.
Unfortunately, the cross was just too far in front of the
ex-Dorchester Town striker whose volley on the stretch looped
into the air, giving Supermarine keeper Mark Scott a comfortable
catch.
Despite that effort the Terras were still looking edgy and
moments later Gosling fired another warning shot from just
outside the box which flew inches over the left upright.
Byerley replaced Emati-Emati just after the break but the
ball still failed to stick up front for the Terras, making
it very difficult for them to get sufficient numbers forward
to pose any real threat to Supermarines backline.
However, on the hour, Weymouths new arrival did test
Scott with a looping header, which the keeper did well to
tip over the bar.
That lifted the home fans and suddenly the Terras began to
show a bit more invention. And just four minutes later, Byerley
gambled again and latched on to a long ball before shooting
across the face of goal.
His low drive beat Scott and rolled agonisingly wide of the
far post.
But back came Supermarine again through their danger man
Gosling, who skipped past a couple of challenges on the edge
of the Weymouth area before firing another effort just off
target.
Cameron Mawer then made a fine last-ditch tackle to deny
Gosling again after Scott Dixon got caught in possession just
inside his own box as tired legs allowed the game to open
up.
Adrenaline was running high and on 85 minutes an over zealous
challenge by Mawer on Allen, who had already fouled substitute
Matteo King, caused a flare up that ended with both men receiving
yellow cards.
Both teams then huffed and puffed in the dying minutes before
Wade blew the final whistle to bring the curtain down on what
was a largely uninspiring contest.
