Terras on the up
By Ky Capel
WEYMOUTH ended a run of 20 of games without a win, and climbed
above bitter rivals Dorchester Town at the same time, thanks
to a 2-1 success over Worcester City.
A 2-0 victory at Torquay United back in February was the
last time the Terras picked up three points but on Saturday
they managed to break the winless streak by notching their
first triumph of the Blue Square South campaign.
Jake Reid opened the scoring at the Wessex Stadium inside
10 minutes before Matt Cooper poked in a second to double
the Terras tally.
Marco Addagio reduced the deficit with a second-half penalty
for rock-bottom City but the Terras held on to claim the spoils
in an early-season basement battle.
Weymouth boss Matty Hale named an unchanged starting XI but
did include himself on the substitutes bench with Matt
Thorne absent for family reasons.
And the hosts made a decent opening to proceedings with Chris
Allen trying his luck from 20 yards and visiting centre-half
Wayne Daniel seeing his block deflect narrowly over the top
of Worcesters goal.
Dean Smith then needed light treatment after a comical collision
with referee Colin Lymer in which the midfielder came off
worse, but Weymouth remained in the ascendancy.
And Ben Hinchliffe was soon forced to make his first save
of the game, diving low to his right to keep out Reids
near post header from Martin Slocombes delivery.
However, the City stopper struggled at the resultant corner,
flapping at the ball numerous times before Reid fired into
an unguarded net to give Weymouth an early lead.
The home side had to contend with a scramble in their own
box in the 19th minute but Hales men escaped unscathed
as Worcester threatened for the first time.
The Terras were soon back on the offensive though, and they
put some breathing space between themselves and City with
a second goal, this time courtesy of Cooper.
Good build-up play set Andy Harris free on the right and
he delivered a dangerous cross, which wasnt fully cleared.
Matt Groves volleyed goalwards only to see his effort blocked
but the loose ball fell for Cooper and he prodded home.
Worcester offered little in attack, besides a long throw
into the penalty area, with their best opening coming via
a Craig Wilding header from 12 yards that cleared the home
crossbar.
However, they created a much better chance five minutes into
the second period only for half-time replacement Rob
Elvins to head narrowly over the top from Kevin Spencers
pin-point cross.
Weymouth were a little slow to get going in the second half,
perhaps understandable given their two-goal advantage, and
it was almost 20 minutes before Smiths cross-cum-shot,
which crashed into the side netting, had the Terras
faithful excited.
But the excitement soon turned to anxiety as Adaggio pulled
a goal back from the spot moments after being denied by Ryan
Harrison from close-range.
An Alfie Carter corner from the right was not dealt with
at the near post and in going for the loose ball, Reid was
adjudged to have bundled over Daniel.
Adaggio stepped up and blasted the penalty straight down
the middle with Harrison diving to his left.
City should have equalised with 15 minutes to go but Martin
Butler, formerly of Reading and Rother-ham United, failed
to beat Harrison from just inside the box.
Hale brought himself into the action in the final 10 minutes,
to a rapturous applause from the fans, and he joined Danny
Bennett, who had earlier replaced Cooper, in attack.
Fellow substitute Jordan Rose thought he had won the home
side a penalty after bursting into the opposition area and
going down under the challenge of two City defenders.
However, the match official gave Worcester a free-kick and
booked Rose for simulation.
As the game entered stoppage time, the visitors upped their
efforts once more and Elvins forced Harrison into action with
a low drive.
But the hosts stood firm to record three crucial points.
And after a positive display and result, the lowly attendance
figure of 603 is sure to improve for August Bank Holiday Mondays
clash with Havant & Waterlooville.
