Reid stuns Exiles
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTH stopped the rot of four straight defeats last night
with an impressive draw at high-flying, and still unbeaten,
Newport County last night.
It was a tale of two Reids at the Newport Stadium as the
Exiles Craig Reid opened the scoring early on before
Weymouths Jake Reid, who replaced the injured Josh Klein-Davies
just past the half-hour mark, equalised in the second period.
Craig Reid would have ended the game the happier of the two
men though, had his first-half penalty not been saved by visiting
keeper Ryan Harrison.
Weymouth made two changes from the 2-1 defeat to Thurrock
at the weekend with ex-skipper Matt Bound, on his return to
the club, and Joe Arnold coming in for Ian Hutchinson and
Matt Townley, who both dropped to the bench.
The Terras though, found themselves under immediate pressure
in South Wales and went a goal behind in only the second minute.
Martin Slocombe was penalised on the right flank and Kevin
Cooper sent his free-kick into the six-yard area where Craig
Reid was on hand to steer the ball home.
Within a couple of minutes Craig Reid had a great chance
to add a second but fired wide from a good position.
At this stage it was one-way traffic with the home side bossing
proceedings and the Terras relying on trying to break from
defence.
One such counter attack saw Slocombe play a long ball over
the heads of the home defence for Klein-Davies to chase.
However, Wayne Turk was able to clear the danger as Aaron
Cook blocked the Weymouth mans run.
The visitors best chance to level came in the 25th
minute when Gary Warren made a mess of a clearance, allowing
Klein-Davies to run on goal only for the Terras striker
to miss the target from 10 yards.
Newport continued to press but without causing Weymouth too
many problems and it was Andy Harris who dug out the next
meaningful shot but his effort went wide.
With 40 minutes on the clock Sam Foley found space inside
the Terras box to latch on to a through ball from Scott
Rogers but then failed to find the target.
An even better opportunity arrived on the stroke of half-time
as County won a penalty for an apparent handball offence that
was only spotted by the referees assistant.
Harrison though, proved up to the challenge and dived to
his left to push Craig Reids effort to safety.
Newport started the second half brightly as Harrison was
forced to steer a stinging shot from Sam Deering over the
crossbar and hold on to a drive from Craig Reid.
A 54th minute cross from Paul Cochlin caused problems in
the visitors defence and was only dealt with when Slocombe
volleyed Coopers shot off the goal-line.
Although Newport were continuing to push forward they were
struggling to cause the Terras defence any serious problems
and were restricted to shooting from distance or from one
of the many free-kicks awarded in their favour.
Weymouth stunned the home crowd with an equaliser in the
71st minute. Andy Caton collected the ball in midfield and
released Jake Reid who rifled home from 18 yards.
Within a minute County thought they had regained the lead
but substitute Dave Gilroys shot through a crowded penalty
area was cleared off the line by the alert Slocombe.
Shortly after, Jake Reid had a good chance to put Weymouth
in front but he was forced to hurry his shot which went too
high The Terras were afforded a let off deep into stoppage
time when Foley headed ex-Magpie Charlie Henrys cross
wide with the goal at his mercy.
But this left the away side with a share of the points that
their dogged determination surely deserved.
