Obaze nets late to gain a draw
By Nigel Biddlecombe
NEW-SIGNING David Obaze became an instant hero with the Weymouth
fans by netting a late equaliser to capture the Terras a precious
point at Maidenhead United last night.
Visiting boss Matty Hale made five changes to the side that
began Saturdays 6-2 drubbing against Eastleigh with
Jake Reid and Matt Groves both grabbing starts and Dean Smith
returning from injury ahead of schedule.
Hale also drafted in another new-signing, Chris Allen, while
there were no places in the squad for Ollie Barnes, Carl Preston,
Jordan Metters or Joe Arnold, who missed out due to a thigh
injury.
Matt Thorne dropped to the bench where he was joined by fellow
substitutes Jordan Rose, Danny Bennett, Scott Brice and keeper
Simon Evans.
Backed by their vocal supporters, Weymouth made a positive
start kicking up the slope and following a throw-in in the
opening minute saw Groves send an effort over the bar from
35 yards.
The home side then suffered a blow on nine minutes when Levin
Saroya had to leave the field with a head injury after clashing
with Reid. In the end the defender had to be replaced by Sam
Collins.
The Terras continued to look the more threatening side and
after Reid fired wide following a half cleared corner, Matt
Cooper intercepted a poor pass by Brown only for his long-range
strike to be deflected off target.
United then responded with their first effort of the game
on 17 minutes when Reis Stanislaus created an opening for
Staforde Palmer but his shot flew well over the crossbar.
The hosts were suddenly coming more and more into the game
and five minutes later a back-pass by the Terras saw keeper
Ryan Harrison lose control and have to pounce on the ball
with his hands.
The referee blew up for a free-kick and when Bobby Behzadi
found Palmer only a fine goal-line clearance from debutant
Obaze stopped the striker from breaking the deadlock.
Jamal Fyfield also made a fine block at the other end to
deny Groves before a powerful header from Behzadi at the end
of the half was superbly saved at full stretch by Harrison
following a long throw.
With the second period a couple of minutes old, Matt Townley
and Andy Harris worked well together to feed Cooper on the
edge of the area but the striker saw his first effort and
rebound blocked.
The home side then responded by winning a free-kick and when
the ball found its way to Stanislaus, he let fly with a powerful
shot that was well-held by Harrison.
Weymouth were now on the ropes and after Kieron St Aimie
shot over the bar they took the lead on 68 minutes when Alex
Wall beat Kyle Critchell on the left and crossed for Palmer
to fire home from 20 yards.
The Magpies then should have added a second when St Aimie
set up Wall with just four minutes to go but the substitute
somehow fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
That proved to be a major turning point as moments later
fine combination play between Danny Bennett and Jordan Rose
set up Obaze to net a last-gasp leveller from 10 yards.
However, Maidenhead still had time to create one more chance
to win it in added-time but Harrison denied them again by
tipping Behzadis shot on to the crossbar to claim the
Terras a point.
