Obaze sees Red as Terras go down to Romans
By Ky Capel
THE Terras were unable to lift the gloom surrounding the Wessex
Stadium as their winless run in Blue Square South stretched
to 11 games.
With the club preparing to enter administration, there has
been little to excite the loyal supporters this season.
Tonight though, the Terras looked on course to earn at least
a point against mid-table Bath City, until the match turned
on its head six minutes into the second period.
Defender David Obaze was given his marching orders and the
Romans assumed full control with Chris Holland and Darren
Edwards bagging the goals that leave rock-bottom Weymouth
six points adrift of safety.
Caretaker-boss Ian Hutchinson made two changes from the side
that lost out 2-1 at Basingstoke on Saturday. Jordan Rose
replaced injury doubt Dean Smith while Jake Reid started ahead
of Carl Foster.
The visitors meanwhile, had three ex-Terras in their matchday
squad Sido Jombarti, Marcus Browning and Stuart Douglas.
It was the struggling hosts who started brightest and they
should have taken the lead as early as the third minute.
But from Chris Allens free-kick following a handball,
the unmarked Josh Llewellyn was guilty of a glaring miss at
the far post.
The Romans were afforded glimpses of Ryan Harrisons
goal in the opening quarter of an hour but Sekani Simpson
fired over from 25 yards and Adam Connelly headed wide from
a Lewis Hogg set-piece.
At the other end Llewellyn, under pressure from two City
defenders, could only divert Allens dangerous low ball
over the top before Obaze, raiding the near post from Allens
corner, came within a whisker of heading home the opener.
Obaze, who was booked straight after following an altercation
with Jombarti, was again close to finding the net when in
the 32nd minute he headed straight at visiting keeper Ryan
Robinson following Scott Dixons delivery.
Bath increased the pressure by forcing three corners in quick
succession. The Terras stood firm with City being restricted
to an ambitious effort from Hogg, which Harrison held on to
comfortably.
Rose appeared to be bundled over in the Romans penalty
area when going for a cross minutes before the break, but
referee Lee Swabey ignored the pleas of the Terras faithful.
The Terras were again quick out of the traps as the second
period got underway Reid flashing a 20-yard drive wide
of the right upright.
However, the home sides cause suffered a huge blow
as defender Obaze was shown his second yellow of the night
in the 51st minute following an unfortunate collision with
Hogg, right on halfway.
Dixon tested Robinson with a near-post effort soon after
but just three minutes later the Romans made their one-man
advantage count with the opening goal.
Harrison came for Hoggs free-kick but was beaten to
the punch by Holland, who nodded into an unguarded net.
The Terras keeper started to make amends with a double
save from substitute Mike Perrott, who capitalised on a loose
pass by Dixon.
Bath were now taking the game by the scruff of the neck and
saw Hogg go close with an ambitious effort.
The hosts were unable to keep the visitors at bay for much
longer and it was 2-0 with 18 minutes to go.
Hoggs corner was nodded down by Connelly for Perrott,
whose rushed attempt was deflected into the path of Edwards
for a simple three-yard finish.
Weymouth were presented with a rare opportunity when Rose
was hauled down 25 yards from goal. Scott Brice let fly but
his fearsome drive was always rising.
Perrott went even closer in the 84th minute with Harrison
adjudged to have tipped his strike over the top.
And Baths number 14 should have made it three in the
closing stages, instead he shot straight at Harrison from
just inside the Terras box.
