Terras pay penalty at Camrose
By Nigel Biddlecombe
BELEAGUERED Weymouth suffered their sixth successive defeat
after they went down at the Camrose.
Terras boss Ian Hutchinson made two changes from last
weeks defeat to Dover Athletic.
Jamie Frampton replaced the injured Jordan Vincent and Kyle
Critchell returned to relegate Jordan Rose to the bench.
Joining Rose as substitutes were Austin Byfield as cover
goalkeeper, and Nathan Loader.
Weymouth elected to start with just one up front Josh
Llewellyn meaning that there was no place in the starting
line-up for Jake Reid.
Weymouth were first to threaten when Ross Kitteridges
weak clearance was snapped up by Llewellyn, but the front
man saw his effort deflected for a corner.
Terras keeper Ryan Harrison coped comfortably with
Tom Williamsons corner, but had no chance when the home
side opened the scoring in the 15th minute.
The hosts were awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty
area, which Steve Laidler took. His floated ball evaded the
Terras defence and Fraser Franks was on hand to power
home from close range.
Five minutes later Llewellyn had a chance to level the scores,
but Kitteridge was quickly off his line to block with his
feet.
David Obaze did well to clear after Laidler was put through
by David Pratt, before the home side earned three corners
in quick succession.
However, the visiting defence denied any clear opportunities
for a shot at goal before Harrison was able to grasp the third
of these kicks.
Jamie Framptons 31st minute free-kick caused the home
side a problem, but when the ball was returned to him
following a poor clearance his second delivery was
poor.
Llewellyn was on hand to flick on a ball from Chris Allen
in the 41st minute but the home keeper was able to save reasonably
comfortably.
A free-kick taken by Ashley Mitchell hit Rose and rebounded
to Robert Rice, but his 25-yard shot flew well over the crossbar.
With the clash a minute into first half stoppage time, the
referee made the decision that proved to be the turning point
of the game.
Rice had outjumped Simon Rad-cliffe and headed across the
penalty area, Carl Foster and Williamson both slid in to attack
the ball which both missed only for the official
to blow his whistle and point towards the penalty spot.
Both sets of players seemed be-mused by the decision and
were even more surprised when Mr Venamore indicated that he
had awarded a penalty.
Obviously unwilling to look a gift horse in the mouth Phil
Ruggles stepped up and drilled the ball past Harrison.
Before the second half could start the crowd witnessed the
sight of Scott Brice and Ryan Harrison lifting Simon Radcliffe
up on their shoulders to repair the goal net, this in the
absence of a ladder.
When the action got underway it was all Weymouth playing
with the wind at their backs as Kyle Critchell floated
two free-kicks into the penalty area within the opening three
minutes sadly both Obaze and Brice were off target
with their headed attempts.
Foster was outmuscled by Mitchell as he tried to get on the
end of a cross by the hard-working Llewellyn before Frampton
and Rose combined to put Chris Allen through on goal, although
Kitteridge was able to smother the midfielders effort.
Basingstokes first serious foray into Weymouth territory
of the second half came in the 67th minute,
as Williamson blazed a free- kick high over the bar and into
the car park.
Obaze was off target with a header from Allens corner
before the referee was on hand to save the home side after
Kitteridge had spilled Llewellyns cross at the feet
of Rose and saw fit to penalise the Terras substitute
after both he and the keeper had attempted to get to the loose
ball.
Basingstokes best chance of the second period came
in the 84th minute when Williamson and Pratt worked an opening
on the right flank for Ian Jones, but the wingmans cross
flew across the Terras penalty area without attracting
a touch.
Weymouth pulled a goal back three minutes from the end when
Reid played a ball into Allen who touched on to the on-rushing
Rose.
The ex-Bashley man hit his shot first time, from 14 yards,
past a static Kitteridge.
As the game moved into added time the Terras were unable
to grab an equaliser which their performance deserved and
were left rueing the penalty decision which definitely proved
to be the difference between the two sides.
