Slain by the Dragons
By Adam Summers
JEFFERSON Louis scored on his return to the Wessex Stadium as
new Wrexham boss Dean Saunders stretched his winning start in
management to five games.
The Terras fought hard throughout the contest but after Bolton
Wanderers loanee Nathan Woolfe had given the visitors the
lead with a wonderful free-kick on his debut the hosts were
undone with two quick-fire goals in the closing stages after
going close to levelling on several occasions. Ex-Weymouth
forward Louis chipped in his ninth of the season before Marc
Williams ran through and struck a third to wrap up another
three Blue Square Premier points.
Stuart Beavon netted a late consolation from 20 yards but
it failed to lift the gloom around the Wessex Stadium as the
home fans left reflecting upon another traumatic week.
With manager John Hollins on gardening leave it was left
to caretaker boss Alan Lewer and Marcus Browning to pick the
Terras starting XI and they made one change, replacing
on-field skipper Ryan Williams with Brazilian defender Santos
Gaia. Full-back Cameron Mawer began on the right of midfield
as the hosts adopted a solid 4-4-2 formation and the opening
exchanges were very tight.
Both teams enjoyed good possession but were unable to create
any chances.
Then, in the 15th minute, a foul by Kevin Sandwith handed
Woolfe a free-kick opportunity, which he duly took with a
splendid curler into the top right corner that gave keeper
Danny Knowles no chance.
The Red Dragons looked solid and organised and despite plenty
of endeavour, Weymouth were struggling to break them down.
Marc Williams fired a half-volley wide from 20 yards for
the visitors after a neat turn before the Terras then had
a shout for a penalty turned down on 37 minutes when Chris
McPhee was upended in the box after gambling on a low cross
from Beavon.
The forward felt sure he had been fouled and continued to
remonstrate with referee Kevin Johnson even after play had
resumed but the official was having none of it.
Stephen Reed then shot a long way wide in the latter stages
of the half and that proved to be the Terras only effort
in what was a dull first 45 minutes.
The hosts began to show more ambition at the start of the
second period with James Coutts curling a free-kick over the
bar and substitute Ryan Williams shooting wide from 10 yards
after collecting McPhees flick on.
Ryan Williams arrival had certainly sparked some life
into the Terras and gave them a bit more shape but the hosts
still had not tested Wrexham keeper Gavin Ward, who for the
time being was enjoying a quiet afternoon.
The Terras continued to huff and puff but on 70 minutes it
was the visitors that went close to adding a second when Wes
Baynes cut in from the right and lashed a half volley against
the top of Knowles crossbar from 20 yards.
An inch lower and Wrexham would have surely been home and
dry but the near miss only served to inspire Weymouth to finally
test Ward with a header from McPhee two minutes later which
was pushed over the top.
Coutts then went close with two efforts in the space of a
minute. The first was deflected into the arms of Ward, while
the second was blocked after more good work from Ryan Williams
on the left.
The Terras were now exerting tremendous pressure on their
opponents with Scott Doe having a header saved and Ryan Williams
inches away from getting on the end of a flick from Beavon
at the far post.
However, just as it looked like the Terras may force an equaliser
they were caught by a sucker punch at the other end on 83
minutes when Louis raced on to a long ball and lobbed the
stranded Knowles who was caught in no mans land.
To make matters worse for the hosts a mistake by Adam Bygrave
one minute later enabled Marc Williams to go through one-on-one
and his finish was clinical to kill off the contest and pour
even more misery on to the home fans.
Beavon fired a low drive into the bottom left corner in added-time
to give the Terras a little lift towards the end but it did
nothing to break the deflated mood at the final whistle.
