No Card trick
By Adam Summers
WEYMOUTH failed to break their winless streak against Woking
at the Wessex Stadium last night but they did end a run of three
successive defeats by claiming a point in a very open contest.
The Terras entered the Blue Square Premier contest having
lost four of their last five encounters against the Cards
so when James Coutts headed them in front at the start of
the second half hopes were high the jinx would finally be
broken.
However, one minute later, a long ball into the box caught
the home defence napping, allowing Woking captain Paul Lorraine
to equalise from close range.
Both teams enjoyed plenty of chances and a point apiece was
perhaps a fair result but the Terras will certainly feel disappointed
that they did not take all three after being much the better
side in the first half.
Weymouth caretaker-manager Alan Lewer made one change to
the starting XI that began Saturdays 3-1 defeat against
Wrexham, replacing Cameron Mawer with club captain Ryan Williams.
There were also some familiar faces in the Woking line-up
where ex-Terras Paolo Vernazza, Abdou El Kholti and Wilfried
Domoraud all started.
The hosts made a bright start with Stuart Beavon playing
a delightful ball over the Woking defence to find Coutts in
the box in the opening minute.
The winger showed good control but chose to cut inside instead
of pulling the trigger and was shut out by a combination of
El Kholti and his keeper Lenny Pidgley.
Coutts was certainly looking lively and on seven minutes
he nearly took advantage of a poor punch from Pidgley with
a left-footed lob from 25 yards but the effort just dropped
over the crossbar.
The Cards were also having problems containing Beavon and
on 14 minutes he raced on to a pass from Chris McPhee only
to see his shot from 14 yards rebound off the foot of the
right-hand post.
Domoraud responded with a speculative strike from 30 yards
that flew high and wide before Kevin Sandwith cut in off the
left flank and drove a shot from the edge of the area into
the safe hands of Pidgley at the other end.
Despite the even nature of the contest it was still the Terras
that were looking the more likely side to break the deadlock
and on 28 minutes another chance fell to Beavon but he was
unable to make sufficient contact from close range after a
nod down from McPhee. The hosts failure to take their
chances was almost punished seven minutes before the break
when Vernazza got to the left byline and cut it back to Daniel
Spence who volleyed over from 12 yards when he should have
hit the target.
Williams replied with a fine 18-yard strike that stung the
hands of Pidgley but at the break it remained goal-less with
both sides perhaps feeling they should have been ahead.
The Terras began the second half in the same fashion as the
first and on 46 minutes more good link-up play between McPhee
and Beavon ended with the latter firing in a shot on the turn
that Pidgley again dealt with comfortably.
Woking looked ragged and on 50 minutes a wonderful cross
from Sandwith with his weaker right foot found Coutts at the
far post and he headed home from close range giving Pidgley
no chance.
The Terras looked like they were going to assume full control
but one minute later they fell asleep allowing Lorraine to
latch on to a hopeful ball into the box and slot past the
on-rushing Danny Knowles.
To their credit the hosts did not hang their heads and instead
went back on the offensive to try and regain the lead, which
they nearly achieved from a short corner that saw Sandwith
fire in a wonderful 20-yard strike that Pidgley did well to
push away. Pierre Joseph-Dubois replaced Coutts on the hour
and moments later a handball from Pidgley on the edge of the
box enabled Sandwith to set his sights again with a free-kick
that slid just wide of the right post.
The contest continued to swing from end-to-end and on 63
minutes a corner into the box by the Cards saw the ball fall
kindly to Matt Pattison at the back post.
The visiting player looked like he had all the time in the
world to pick his spot but Santos Gaia flung himself into
the path of the shot to divert it to safety.
The Cards were beginning to gain more confidence and with
78 minutes remaining substitute Giuseppe Sole broke through
only to be denied by a wonderful one-handed save from Knowles.
Both teams continued to huff and puff in the closing stages
as the game became stretched but neither side were able to
find a winner as both defences held firm.
