Beavers ace in the pack
By Nigel Biddlecombe
A SHARE of the points was no more than the Terras deserved
from last night's Blue Square Premier fixture at Kingfield
Stadium.
John Hollins brought keeper Richard Barnard, who missed Saturday's
victory over Eastbourne Borough after the birth of his son,
back into the side in place of penalty save hero Danny Knowles.
Adam Bygrave was called up for the suspended Scott Doe and
Michael Malcolm was relegated to the bench in favour of Santos
Gaia.
Woking had the early chances, both from free-kicks, with
Giuseppe Sole firing well over the crossbar and Tom Hutchinson
heading Danny Bunce's set-piece wide.
Goma Lambu benefited from a good build up by the home side
as Liam Marum, Sole and Joel Ledgister combined well to find
the midfielder in space, however, his effort was wide of the
upright.
Marum saw an effort deflected for a corner, before the same
man got on the end of a long clearance by Woking keeper Lennie
Pidgeley, but his shot was scuffed and flew harmlessly into
the home supporters behind the goal.
Weymouth's first chance on goal came after 16 minutes when Stuart
Beavon, playing as a lone striker, found space on the right
and cut inside before firing in a fierce shot which Pidgeley
thumped away, Chris McPhee reacted first to latch on to the
rebound but his snap-shot was off target.
Although the Terras were playing some good football they
were not quite able to fashion any real opportunities up front.
This was despite Beavon working hard to look for an opening
and a tight first period ended with Kevin Sandwith producing
a terrific recovering tackle to deny Ledgister after the Terras'
defender had failed to control a pass from Lambu.
Once again Woking started the quickest as the second half
kicked off and a superb three-man move ended disappointingly
for the Cards when Delano Sam-Yorke - who came into the side
only after ex-Terra Wilfried Domoraud had suffered an injury
during the warm up - sent in a good cross which Marum blasted
well wide.
Weymouth began to settle and Beavon did well to make ground
down the right flank before firing in a cross which Sam Cutler
turned towards goal - only for Bunce to deflect the young
midfielder's effort out for a corner.
With 58 minutes gone Beavon broke the deadlock when Cameron
Mawer's long clearance was intercepted by Hutchinson and the
striker did extremely well to rob the home skipper before
beating Pidgeley from an acute angle.
The goal served to open the game up with the play moving
from end to end. Bradley Quamina hit a shot out of the stadium
from 30 yards for Woking while the visitors appeared to be
denied a penalty when a Beavon pass put Ryan Williams in on
goal.
As the club skipper attempted to flick the ball over the
head of Patrice Konan the Woking man seemed to swat the ball
down with his hand, but referee Ford turned down Weymouth's
appeals.
The equaliser came in the 80th minute when a long clearance
from Konan saw Ledgister get the better of Bygrave before
beating the advancing Barnard.
Within minutes Bygrave was on hand to stop the home side
taking the lead as he headed a Hutchinson header off the goal-line
for a corner, which Bunce delivered only for Hutchinson to
head high.
For Weymouth, Pierre Joseph-Dubois did well to force a corner
on the right, which Stephen Reed took. Bygrave was on hand
again to fire in a header, but saw his effort go wide.
Woking might have snatched the points right at the death
when Mawer was harshly penalised 25 yards from his own goal.
Bunce took the free-kick which was met by the Hutchinson
who rose unchallenged only to see his powerful header cannon
off the crossbar and away to safety, leaving the Terras with
a deserved share of the spoils.
