Woe at Welling
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTH were dumped out of the FA Carlsberg Trophy at Park
View Road last night when they were beaten by Blue Square South
side Welling.
And to compound the misery for the Terras, Stephen Reed and
Jordan Collins were both taken to hospital with suspected
broken ankles.
The kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes after Welling defender
Ryan Johnson appeared to suffer a fit during the warm up.
He was taken to hospital for treatment however, the incident
seemed to affect the Terras more than the home side who opened
the scoring after just 54 seconds.
Lee Protheroe took a short free-kick to Lee Blackburn who
got behind the Terras defence before pulling the ball
back to Loui Fazakerley. The Wings man hit a ball across
the penalty area which found Charlie Sheringham who gleefully
drilled the ball into the empty net.
The visitors tried to fight back with Collins finding Reed
whose cross fell to Ryan Williams, but the Terras club
captain saw his effort hit the side-netting.
Shortly after, Stuart Beavon headed just wide following a
good build-up involving Chris McPhee, Reed and Adam Bygrave.
Weymouth had a mountain to climb after 18 minutes, when the
hosts doubled their advantage.
Once again the visiting defence failed to deal with a set-piece.
On this occasion Sonny Cobbs throw-in was helped on
by Blackburn only for Reed to intercept.
Unfortunately the Weymouth man sliced his clearance allowing
Moses Ademola to run in and fire home past Danny Knowles from
12 yards.
Almost from the restart Black-burn fed Sheringham, but the
home striker shot wide when he might well have added a third.
The Terras tried to come back and Collins free-kick
was met by McPhee with a clever flick only for home keeper
Clark Masters to save superbly.
The situation worsened for the visitors when Collins rose
to head Bygraves cross narrowly wide only to land badly
and suffer a nasty ankle injury which necessitated him being
stretchered from the field.
As the half drew to a close Wey-mouth were relieved to see
Sher-ingham shoot wide following a very neat four-man move
and Knowles was forced to tip a free-kick from Blackburn over
his crossbar.
The home side certainly seemed to have lady luck on their
side as Weymouth hit the woodwork twice within the final six
minutes of the half.
Firstly Beavon got on the end of a pass from McPhee and rounded
Cobbs only to see his shot go across the face of the goal
and rebound off an upright and into the grateful hands of
Masters.
Then Joseph-Dubois header from a Bygrave cross was
pushed out by the Wings keeper only for Reed to drill
the rebound against the crossbar.
Although a stern half-time talk by caretaker-boss Alan Lewer
seemed to have a positive affect on his men the Terras were
not able to exert any real control on the second period as
Welling continued to show that whatever they may have lacked
in skill they more than made up with determination.
Early in the half Sheringham headed wide for the hosts and
Sanchez Ming shot over the crossbar.
Knowles long clearance found McPhee who put Williams
clear on the left. The Terras man found Beavon, but
his shot was saved by Masters at the second attempt.
Beavon went close again seconds later after McPhee had found
him with a good ball but this time the shot flew just past
a post.
Welling came back and Knowles had to save when Sheringham
met a free-kick from Blackburn with a powerful header while
Ademola fired wide when he reached another Blackburn set-piece
before the Terras defence.
Dubois latched on to a Knowles clearance and found
space to hit a shot, but his effort went wide.
Beavon saw two efforts fly high while Wellings Ademola
was off target with a shot from distance before Weymouth hit
the woodwork for a third time.
Cameron Mawer found McPhee with a cleverly weighted ball
and the ex-Ebbsfleet man ran on to chip the ball over the
head of the advancing Masters only to see the ball take a
dramatic bounce and clip the crossbar before going harmlessly
for a goal kick. n Weymouth Supporters Travel Club is
