Against the odds
by Ross Reid
CLUB captain Ryan Williams and 15-goal top scorer Stuart Beavon
were both on target as beleaguered Wey-mouth upset south coast
Blue Square Premier rivals Torquay United.
Williams scored a superb first half stoppage-time strike,
arrowing the ball in from the right after a superb left-wing
Beavon cross, for the cash-strapped club.
Beavon then calmly slotted away the 88th minute breakaway
goal from the edge of the box, after being teed up by James
Coutts, as Alan Lewers side countered quickly with Torquay
committed to attack.
Weymouth recalled Devon-born former Gulls defender
Stephen Reed in midfield to fill the void left by the departure
of former Terras skipper Anton Robinson, who has joined AFC
Bournemouth.
Reed was not the only Torquay old boy in town. Lewers
starting line up also included former Gulls strikers Lee Phillips
and Chris McPhee, deployed in a central midfield role.
Both sides took their time to settle on a slick playing surface
but it was Terras number one Danny Knowles who was the busiest
of the two keepers early on.
As well as capably dealing with a couple of testing early
crosses, Knowles starting in front of the Weymouth
fans in the away stand made a superb 17th minute diving
save to turn away Roscoe Dsanes angled goal-bound drive
from the left corner of the penalty box.
He then did well to hold a 21st minute Lyseden Christie snap-shot.
The home side had penalty appeals waved away by referee Andy
Hendley as Christie tumbled under a Cameron Mawer challenge
and within seconds were on the attack, with dangerman Beavon
scooping a deflected shot just over the bar.
United number one Scott Bevan then had to stretch his six
foot six frame to full extent to snatch a high lob from Phillips
out of the air.
On the half hour, Wayne Carlisle crashed a shot just wide
of a post and again Weymouth came back at their hosts,
with Williams testing Bevan with a deep, probing cross from
far out on the right.
Scott Doe called into the Eng-land C squad last week
displayed why when he made a brilliant block to deny
Torquay top scorer Tim Sills as he let fly with a 38th minute
shot on the turn.
Christie then skimmed an effort just wide as United tried
to find their way to goal. However, it was Weymouth who found
the net first, with a wonderfully controlled low strike by
winger Williams in first half stoppage time.
Torquay boss Paul Buckle a former Terras midfielder
responded by sending on wingers Danny Stevens and Mustapha
Carayol at the start of the second half.
But it was midfielder Nicky Wroe who tested Knowles in the
opening minute of the half.
After Stevens skimmed a centre across the face of goal, Kevin
Nicholson weaved his way into the penalty box before testing
Knowles again and then Lee Mansell had penalty appeals waved
away as his cross was charged down.
Reed forced Bevan full length with a blistering 25-yard shot
in the 65th minute before Coutts let fly with an audacious
30-yard effort that Bevan had to flap over.
Doe made an off the line clearance and then Santos Gaia denied
Stevens, heading clear the rebound.
Weymouth sealed their victory when Beavon calmly stroked
their second goal past the diving Bevan, who had to make a
brilliant stoppage time save to prevent Beavon from making
it 3-0.
