Borough add to Terras' woe
By Ky Capel
STEVENAGE Borough recorded a somewhat flattering victory over
Weymouth to inflict a first defeat of 2009 on the home side.
The Terras were not at their best, quite understandable given
the recent turmoil the club finds itself in, but a 3-0 loss
was particularly harsh.
A mistake from Santos Gaia just before half-time led to Boroughs
opening goal before two counter-attacking moves late on secured
all three points for the promotion-chasers.
Terras boss Alan Lewer, who announced that he will
step down after this Saturdays game with Rushden &
Diamonds, was able to name an unchanged side from that which
recorded a fantastic 2-0 victory at Torquay United in midweek.
After a fairly pedestrian opening in which neither side created
anything of note it took 21 minutes for an attempt at either
goal the visitors though, fired wide of the far post.
Weymouths first shot came via James Coutts, however,
his volley from 30 yards cleared the stands.
Steve Morison, the leagues top scorer, was then guilty
of wasting the best chance of the half on 26 minutes when
he blazed over from just 10 yards out with only home keeper
Danny Knowles to beat.
The Terras were pressing their opponents well, forcing the
third-placed outfit into numerous misplaced passes.
And the hosts would have forged ahead in the 36th minute
had it not been for the woodwork. Coutts free-kick was
cleared only as far as Kevin Sandwith who nodded the ball
back into the danger zone where Scott Doe hooked an effort
goalwards. Borough keeper Chris Day could only watch as the
ball rebounded off his crossbar.
The Terras appeared to be in the ascendancy and with five
minutes to go before half-time Ryan Williams picked out Lee
Phillips who found himself with a sight of the Stevenage goal.
Visiting defender Scott Laird raced back to make the challenge
and the ball bobbled through to a relieved Day.
But for all their endeavour, Weymouth were dealt a sucker
punch as Stevenage took the lead.
Day pumped the ball up field and it looked an easy one for
Santos Gaia to deal with, but the Brazilian completely missed
it and Lee Boylan was left with a clean run at the home goal.
Santos Gaias blushes looked to have been spared by
a tremendous tackle from Doe. However, in cruel fashion the
loose ball fell kindly for Andy Drury who lashed home.
The Terras would have felt hard done by at the half-time
break and they came out for the second period clearly intent
on redressing the balance.
But it was the visitors who created the early openings of
the half, Darren Murphy firing off target before Drury pulled
a weak effort wide of goal from 18 yards.
Weymouth hit back and a delightful long pass from Sandwith
was expertly brought down by Phillips in the box, but the
former Rushden man unselfishly tried to lay it back and the
opportunity died out.
Mitchell Cole stretched his legs and carried the ball a long
way before forcing a parry from Knowles.
The home side had strong appeals for a penalty waved away
midway through the half by referee Brendan Malone after Santos
Gaia received a heavy nudge in the back.
Weymouth were moving up the gears at this point and twice
went agonisingly close to finding an equaliser.
First, a scramble in the box ended with Beavon heading goalwards
from a matter of eight yards but the lethal front man was
denied by a superb right-handed save from Day.
Then, from the resultant corner delivered by Coutts, the
ball ricocheted off the foot of McPhee and was headed for
the bottom corner but a crucial clearance on the line from
Laird maintained the visitors advantage.
Morison wasted a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0, finding
the legs of Knowles as opposed to the back of the net.
Stevenage continued to look dangerous on the counter and
after having shouts for a penalty turned down, they made the
game safe with two goals in the final four minutes.
Drury turned provider for Morison to grab his 20th league
goal of the campaign before Michael Bostwick beat Doe to the
bouncing ball and fired beyond Knowles.
