Beavon off the mark as Terras hold on
By Nigel Biddlecombe
Malcolm and Chris McPhee both saw efforts fly wide before
Beavon broke the deadlock.
Bernard's long clearance was directed on by McPhee to Malcolm
and the Terras' wide man played the ball into the box.
Beavon, with his back to goal, controlled and turned in one
movement to drill his shot low past the despairing dive of
Cole.
Weymouth were caught napping straight from the restart when
Constable found Lewis Haldane on the edge of the Terras' penalty
area, but Bernard showed great agility to produce a flying
right-handed save.
As the home side began to exert pressure on the visitors
Mawer had to dive and head clear Constable's cross for a corner,
Haldane hit the woodwork with a 30-yard effort and the same
player miskicked from ten yards with the goal at his mercy.
Another long clearance from Bernard nearly produced a second
goal for Weymouth when McPhee played the ball to Williams.
The Terras' club captain found team captain Robinson, who
in turn played a great ball to Beavon.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the striker's effort was
saved by Cole.
Oxford came at Weymouth straight from the off in the second
half and Constable got the better of Doe, but Bernard saved
comfortably.
Malcolm hit a free-kick harmlessly over the bar in the 49th
minute. However, the Terras were struggling to get out of
their own half as Oxford relentlessly pushed forward.
Constable, Haldane and Odubade all wasted reasonable chances
while Marcio dos Santos Gaia, Mawer and Doe all produced good
challenges to thwart the home side's efforts.
Beavon latched onto a long kick by Bernard and shot wide,
before Stephen Reed brought a good save from Cole as the Terras
tried to take some of the pressure off their hard working
defence.
Odubade and Haldane went close before the latter was replaced
by Michael Husbands, whose first touch was a shot that flashed
inches wide of an upright.
The same player then saw a header well saved by the impressive
Bernard and another effort clear the crossbar.
However, there was to be no reprieve for Oxford as the hard
working Terras held on to take the points in a repeat of last
season's corresponding fixture.
WEYMOUTH continued their impressive start to the season
as they withstood all Oxford could throw at them at the Kassam
Stadium last night to pick up three points.
Stuart Beavon opened his account for the new Blue Square
Premier campaign by grabbing the only goal of the game on
17 minutes.
Terras' boss John Hollins named an unchanged side from Saturday's
opening day victory over Gray Athletic, and his men were under
pressure immediately.
The home side attacked straight from the kick-off through
James Constable, but a well-timed tackle from Cameron Mawer
cleared the danger. At the other end skipper Anton Robinson
was denied by Adam Murray's challenge, before Yemi Odubade
shot well over the Terras' crossbar.
Play swung from end to end and Mawer might have done better
when he slipped just as he attempted to control a ball from
Ryan Williams, while Beavon brought a fine save from Oxford
keeper Jake Cole after terrific work down the left by Michael
Malcolm.
Richard Bernard saved the visitors with a terrific left-handed
stop from Odubade after the United man had muscled past Scott
Doe.
