Terras blitz Vics
By Adam Summers
THE new strike-force of Stuart Beavon and Lee Phillips ensured
Weymouth enjoyed a comfortable afternoon against bottom club
Northwich Victoria in the Blue Square Premier.
Beavon netted twice in the opening 10 minutes before Phillips
grabbed his first goal in his second spell for the club to
kill off the Vics prior to the break.
The visitors created several opportunities in the second
half as the Terras took their foot after the gas but there
was no doubt that the hosts deserved the three points.
Terras boss Alan Lewer named the same line-up that
began the previous Saturdays 2-0 win at Kidderminster
Harriers while Northwich included two former Terras in their
squad with Lee Elam being handed a spot in the starting XI
and Matthew Bailey taking a place on the bench.
With no win in their last nine league encounters, the Vics
needed a positive start but on five minutes a mistake from
debutant Jay Conroy handed the Terras an early lead.
Phillips crossed from the right and when the full-back had
his clearance charged down by Ryan Williams, he panicked and
hauled the winger to the ground.
Referee Kevin Johnson immediately pointed to the spot and
showed Conroy a yellow card, and Beavon made no mistake with
the penalty, sending keeper Ryan Clarke the wrong way.
That certainly got the home sides tails up and five
minutes later they doubled their advantage when more hesitant
defending at a free-kick allowed Chris McPhee to find Beavon
whose shot flicked off a defender and looped over Clarke into
the far corner of the net. James Coutts made sure the ball
crossed the line but there was no doubt that it was Beavons
goal.
Williams was proving a constant threat for the hosts and
after Scott Doe had made a great challenge to deny Northwich
forward Lee Steele, the talented midfielder played in Anton
Robinson, who tried to slide the ball across to a team-mate
rather than shoot, only to see the danger cleared.
Northwich were clearly lacking shape at the back and moments
later Williams began causing problems again. First he set
up Phillips, who blazed over, and then he linked up with Beavon
before firing in a shot that Clarke did well to turn wide.
A third goal was clearly on the cards and it came on 32 minutes
when Beavons shot ricocheted into the path of Phillips,
who seemed to have the freedom of the penalty area to saunter
on a couple yards and slot the ball past the frustrated Northwich
stopper.
Visiting skipper Simon Grand sent a header wide two minutes
before the break but apart from that brief scare the Terras
looked totally in command.
To their credit the away side came out at the start of the
second half and had a go at Weymouth but they were unable
to find a way through.
Substitute Damien Reeves had an appeal for a penalty turned
down when Kevin Sandwith made an outstanding sliding tackle
to dispossess the striker, who moments later then fired over
after getting the other side of Santos Gaia.
Reeves then went close again with a shot across goal before
Doe and keeper Danny Knowles collided when attempting to clear
another threatening attack.
The brave defender was left prone on the deck after the coming
together but fears of serious injury were swept aside two
minutes later when he climbed back to his feet and re-entered
the action.
The Vics continued to huff and puff and after Dean Lodge
had a strike pushed wide by Knowles, Karl Murray then sent
a free-kick on target that was cleared off the line by Doe.
Despite not creating a decent chance in the second half,
Weymouth still looked comfortable and unsurprisingly took
their foot off the gas ahead of Tuesdays trip to Grays.
Elam had the games final opportunity in the dying the
minutes but his effort from close range at the far post flew
across goal and deflected into the path of Mawer who cleared
to safety to ensure Weymouth a second successive clean-sheet.
