Brilliant Beavon grounds Harriers
By Nigel Biddlecombe
SOUGHT-AFTER Weymouth striker Stuart Beavon scored two quality
goals to seal a magnificent victory at Aggborough.
Despite not having played a competitive game since Boxing
Day the Terras returned from the Midlands with three Blue
Square Premier League points and it was no more than they
deserved.
New signing Lee Phillips, who showed he had lost none of
the flair that made him a Wessex favourite in his previous
stay, made his debut for Alan Lewers men and formed
a formidable partnership up front with Beavon.
Jordan Collins and Stephen Reed failed late fitness tests
for the visitors, although the latter was named as a substitute
and coach Marcus Browning made his much delayed return to
action with a late cameo appearance from the bench.
Kidderminster had two chances within the opening four minutes.
Martin Brittain found room on the right only for his cross
to fly harmlessly across goal and then Russell Penn shot weakly
at Terras keeper Danny Knowles.
With the wind at their backs Wey-mouth launched a series
of forays at the home goal with James Coutts shooting wide
after he had collected a flick on by Phillips.
Kevin Sandwith saw his free-kick deflected for a corner by
Mark Creighton, Scott Doe headed narrowly past an upright
after a superb run by Ryan Williams and Anton Robinson headed
over after Williams had ran behind the home defence and crossed
into the penalty area.
Beavon gave the Harriers an indication of what he could do
as he made ground for himself before directing his effort
just past a post in the 20th minute before Weymouth put together
their best move of the half.
Cameron Mawer put Williams away on the left and the Terras
man hit his cross low and hard across the penalty area. Phillips
and Beavon both stepped over the ball before it reached Coutts,
whose first touch was just a bit too heavy allowing home keeper
Adam Bartlett to grab the ball.
At the other end Doe produced a superb challenge to halt
Brian Smikles run after Stefan Moore had helped on Bartletts
long clearance.
Williams saw a shot fly narrowly over the crossbar after
Phillips had beaten Creighton to Sandwiths free-kick
before Beavon opened the scoring after 43 minutes.
Lee Baker failed to clear a cross into the area allowing
the former Didcot striker to control the ball and cut in from
the right before drilling across Bartlett and into the net
from ten yards out.
Coutts almost added a second in stoppage time when he collected
a pass from Sandwith before blasting his effort inches past
an upright from 35 yards.
With the wind now behind them it was expected that the home
side would come at the Terras after the break, but they seemed
to be content with hitting long, hopeful balls down the park
and allowing their front men to chase them down.
Although Weymouth had to be aware they still looked dangerous
on the counter-attack.
With Kidderminster taking time to settle the opening opportunities
fell to the visitors as Robinson outjumped Baker to provide
Beavon with a shooting chance, which flew wide of the target.
In the 52nd minute Phillips beat two home defenders to reach
Sandwiths corner and head goalwards, but then looked
on in agony as the ball rolled inches wide of a post.
A minute later Smikle created space for Justin Richards who
shot for Kidderminsters first real effort on target,
which was held by Knowles.
Collecting the Weymouth keepers clearance Williams
beat a defender before running across the face of the penalty
area only to be chopped down by Andy Ferrell.
Sandwith stepped up to take the resulting free-kick which
he curled round the wall only to see it rebound from the right-hand
upright with Bartlett nowhere to be seen.
In the 55th minute Weymouth deservedly doubled their advantage
with a goal of real quality.
Williams put Beavon clear on the left hand edge of the area,
the Terras frontman cut across the box before turning and
firing a terrific strike with the outside of his right boot
which left Bartlett helpless.
This set back finally stung the Harriers into action and
Knowles was called upon to pull of a terrific one-handed save
from a 35-yard effort by Richards before Brittain scooped
a loose ball into the visiting keepers hands from six-yards.
Keith Lowe headed narrowly wide from Brittains corner
before Knowles was again called into action when Santos Gaia
deflected a cross from David McDermott goalwards.
When the Terras failed to clear a shot from Matthew Barnes-Homer,
in the 81st minute, it seemed that Kidderminster must pull
a goal back as Richards powered an effort goalwards,
however, Knowles was on hand again to tip the ball over the
crossbar.
As the match drew to a close it was Weymouth who looked more
likely to add to their tally as Chris McPhee saw Bartlett
thwart him twice.
At the final whistle as the players and around 100
travelling fans celebrated a Weymouth performance that was,
in my opinion, the best this season the joy was tempered
by the sight of Pierre Joseph-Dubois being carried from the
field with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
