Histon horror show
By Adam Summers
INDECISIVE defending saw Weymouth's unbeaten home record blown
to pieces by Histon at the Wessex Stadium.
Michael Malcolm put the Terras ahead with a curler from long-range
on 24 minutes but the visitors levelled just seven minutes
later when Jack Midson's shot ricocheted past keeper Richard
Barnard off the leg of a defender.
Adam Bygrave then headed into his own net moments later but
he soon made amends for his error four minutes after the break
when he got on the end of a corner to restore parity once
again.
However, the home side's backline never looked assured in
the wet conditions and the Stutes soon hit back with two goals
from Damien Reeves and a late strike from Danny Wright to
claim the three points much to the disappointment of the home
crowd.
The Terras recalled Kevin Sand-with to their starting XI.
The left-back, who missed Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat at Salisbury
City due to the impending birth of his baby daughter, replaced
James Coutts allowing Stephen Reed to revert back to his preferred
position in the centre of midfield.
Chris McPhee recovered from a brief bout of illness in midweek
to retain his place while there was also a spot on the bench
for Pierre Joseph-Dubois, who is now fit again after several
weeks on the sidelines with a thigh problem.
Having only collected one point from their previous three
games the Terras were clearly keen to get back on track.
Home boss John Hollins decided to take a seat in the stand
for the start of the encounter and he witnessed a lively opening
with Histon's direct game winning them two corners and several
throw-ins around the Weymouth box in the opening ten minutes.
One such moment saw the ball hurled in from the sideline
to the near post where a flick on caused a scramble in the
six-yard box.
The initial effort from Nathaniel Knight-Percival was hacked
off the line before Antonio Murray had a shot deflected away
to safety.
Reed replied with a shot from distance that flew wide on
11 minutes but the hosts' slick passing game was still not
functioning as fluently as normal.
Heavy rain began lashing down moments later and it signalled
a stunning opener from Weymouth.
Stuart Beavon made an outstanding sliding tackle to dispossess
the dawdling Patrick Ada and when the ball broke loose to
Malcolm, he curled a first time shot beyond keeper Danny Naisbitt
and into the top right corner from 25 yards.
The visitors immediately responded with a period of pressure
at the other end with Barnard denying Knight-Percival before
two goals in two minutes saw the tables turned.
First, Midson levelled on the half-hour with a deflected
shot that beat Scott Doe on the line before home defender
Bygrave misjudged a cross from Murray and headed into his
own net to hand the Stutes the lead.
It was a dire spell for the hosts and it was clear that Hollins
and his assistant Alan Lewer had a lot to sort out at the
interval as their players trudged off with their heads bowed.
To their credit the Terras came out and instantly put pressure
on the visitors with McPhee playing in Malcolm who had a shot
blocked after the visitors had given the ball away from kick-off.
However, the jitters were still there in the home team with
Bygrave's under-hit pass back nearly putting Wright in but
Barnard was quick off his line to slide at the forward's feet
to clear the danger.
It was a breathtaking start to the second period and after
Beavon had a half-volley on the turn pushed around a post
by Naisbitt, Bygrave headed in at the far post from the resulting
corner to make it 2-2.
Barnard made a comfortable save to his right to keep out
a low skidding drive from Wright as the Stutes looked to reply,
and with 27 minutes remaining more indecision at the back
by the Terras enabled them to do exactly that.
A cross from the right was not dealt with and when Murray
shot back into a crowded six-yard box there was Reeves to
turn it past Barnard.
Once again the hosts looked stunned and Midson would have
made it 4-2 shortly after had Barnard not made a point-blank
save to send a fierce strike from 10 yards flying out of the
box to safety.
Hollins sent on James Coutts for Ryan Williams on 70 minutes
to try and get his side going again but just 120 seconds later
Reeves grabbed his second.
The goal poacher swivelled and turned the ball in from close
range after Bygrave had blocked an initial shot from Murray.
Beavon and Anton Robinson tested Naisbitt as Weymouth attempted
a late salvage mission but it never materialised and Reeves
would have had a third had Barnard not pulled off another
fine save on 88 minutes.
Despite that superb stop though the Terras' keeper did have
to pick the ball out of the net again.
This time a clinical finish from Wright in the final minute
sent the home supporters heading towards the exit gates justifiably
disappointed with their team's poor display.
