Thomas thwarts Terras
By Nigel Biddlecombe
IN-FORM Weymouth were denied a Blue Square Premier treble last
night when Wesley Thomas struck for Grays on 69 minutes to peg
the Terras back.
Sought-after striker Stuart Beavon had given the visitors
the lead on nine minutes.
Terras boss Alan Lewer kept faith with the team that
beat Northwich Victoria on Saturday for last nights
clash at the Recreation Ground.
From the kick-off the South Coast outfit took the game to
the home side.
Cameron Mawers cross from the right found Lee Phillips
who rose to head goalwards only to see his effort narrowly
clear the crossbar.
Although Grays forced two corners in quick succession, Wey-mouths
defence held firm and it was the visitors who took the lead
in the ninth minute.
James Coutts short free-kick was gathered by Mawer
and his first-time cross was allowed to travel fully across
the home penalty area before being gathered by Ryan Williams.
The Terras club skipper fired in an inch-perfect cross
which Beavon met superbly to power his header past Steve Arnold
in the home goal.
Terras keeper Danny Knowles easily held a shot from
outside the box by Andy Pugh and at the other Coutts saw his
effort deflected for a corner.
Weymouth had a let off minutes later when Pugh smashed an
effort from the edge of the box. Knowles saved well to his
left but was unable to hold the ball, which rebounded to Thomas.
However, with the entire goal to aim at the Grays man
hit his shot against the crossbar.
Within minutes Sam Sloma fired a 35-yard free-kick against
an upright and from the clearance the ball fell to Coutts,
whose curling effort from all of 30 yards brought a brilliant
save from Arnold.
The first meaningful action of the second period almost saw
Wey-mouth double their advantage when Phillips charged down
Arnolds clearance allowing Beavon to shoot, but Arnold
redeemed himself by saving with his feet.
Beavon had another chance almost immediaely afterwards as
Phillips helped on a long clearance by Knowles. This time
the Terras leading scorer was unable to make a decent
connection with the ball allowing Arnold to save comfortably.
Grays levelled in the 69th minute when the Terras defence
allowed Thomas to muscle his way into the danger area before
holding off Scott Does challenge to fire home despite
pressure from Knowles.
This success breathed new life in to the Essex side but they
were unable to trouble Knowles while at the other end Weymouth
were unable to put any real pressure on Arnold.
Kenny Davis had Grays best chance as the match drew
to a close when a Stuart Thurgood pass found him in space
on the edge of the six-yard box but his effort was feeble
and failed to trouble Knowles as it went well wide.
At the final whistle the sides shared the points, which was
probably a fair reflection on the game.
