Dubois delight
By Adam Summers
PIERRE Joseph-Dubois came off the bench and netted an injury-time
winner as 10-man Weymouth secured a second win on the spin at
the Wessex Stadium.
Matt Crabb put Borough ahead after some lacklustre defending
before Stuart Beavon levelled with a retaken penalty after
his initial effort was saved by Lee Hook, who was judged to
have moved off his line before the ball was struck.
Chris McPhee then made it 2-1 but shortly after the break
a mistake by Scott Doe led to him hauling down Andy Atkin
in the box and receiving a straight red card.
Danny Knowles saved the resulting penalty on his competitive
debut but the visitors went on to equalise through Matt Smart.
Eastbourne had seemingly assumed complete control but the
Terras belied their one-man disadvantage by finishing the
stronger team and after Beavon had hit a post, Joseph-Dubois
snatched his side the three points with a strike in the final
minute.
The Terras made two changes to their starting XI with Knowles
replacing Richard Barnard, who missed the game to support
his pregnant partner, and Beavon coming in for Joseph-Dubois.
Santos Gaia was also included on the bench, making his first appearance
in a match-day squad since recovering from injury.
Having only collected two points from their previous four
home games Weymouth were clearly keen to set the tone in the
early stages.
McPhee got in behind the visiting defence on four minutes
only to send a tame cross into the hands of keeper Lee Hook
before Michael Malcolm had two opportunities to run one-on-one
at his marker only to fail to get the ball under sufficient
control.
Borough had hardly offered anything but on eight minutes
they took the lead with their very first attack. Some hesitant
defending allowed Matt Crabb too much space in the box and
he turned and shot low past Knowles from eight yards.
The Terras responded by putting in a fine cross from the
right that caused problems in the visiting defence. Doe had
a shot blocked before Anton Robinson was wrestled to the floor
by an opponent while trying to latch on to the loose ball.
Unfortunately for the hosts their shouts for a penalty were
turned away by referee Mike Bull.
Neither side were looking comfortable at the back in the
blustery and wet conditions and on 15 minutes Weymouth dropped
too deep allowing Atkin to take aim and fire a low drive just
wide from 20 yards.
The Terras desperately needed a spark to get them going and
it came two minutes later when Matt Crabb was judged to have
impeded McPhee in the box while contesting a high ball, handing
the hosts a chance to level from the spot.
Beavon had his first attempt superbly saved by Hook but the
officials ordered it to be taken again and this time the Weymouth
striker slotted the ball into the left corner of the net.
Borough clearly felt aggrieved and they took their protest
too far with manager Garry Wilson being sent to the stands
and Neil Jenkins picking up a booking for dissent.
The Terras were now looking the more dangerous side and on
25 minutes they got a second with a stunning move on the break.
Ryan Williams broke down the right and found Sam Cutler who
showed superb composure to play in Malcolm on the left. The
flying winger then broke into the box and slid the ball across
to McPhee who tapped in from three yards.
It was a glorious breakaway goal that would have graced any
standard of football but Eastbourne soon hit back with Atkin
heading at Knowles on 26 minutes and Matt Crabb having a shot
blocked wide after a poor punch by the home stopper.
However, the visitors' best chance of levelling before the
break came 15 minutes later when Allan Tait again fired an
attempt straight into Knowles' hands after a superb one-two
with Matt Crabb.
Weymouth brought on Santos Gaia for Stephen Reed at the interval
in an attempt to shore up their defence but within four minutes
of the restart they suffered a calamity when Doe sliced a
clearance allowing Atkin to run clean through.
The young centre-back retreated to make amends but he ended
up pulling the forward down in the box and receiving a red
card for a professional foul. Skipper Paul Armstrong took
the spot-kick but his effort was saved brilliantly to his
right by Knowles.
The Terras immediately made another change by replacing Malcolm
with defender Adam Bygrave but their hopes of holding on to
their lead evaporated on 58 minutes when a fine ball in from
the left found Smart whose flick at the near post was palmed
into the net by Knowles.
The hosts were now being swamped but after Darren Budd had
a shot from distance pushed wide for Eastbourne, Beavon broke
away at the other end only to see his low strike across Hook
hit the base of the far post.
Borough continued to huff and puff in search for a winner
but with 18 minutes remaining 10-man Weymouth created another
good chance with Beavon playing in substitute Joseph-Dubois
whose shot rolled across the face of the target and just wide.
Despite their numerical advantage the visitors were now looking
shaky and moments later Kevin Sandwith went close with a sweet
effort from 30 yards that Hook was relieved to see go the
wrong side of his left post.
Borough responded with an opening for Matt Crabb whose touch
let him down allowing Knowles to race off his line and clear
before Joseph-Dubois latched on to a pass from Beavon and
shot home a dramatic winner that Hook failed to stop despite
getting a hand to it.
