Terras halt Reds march
By Adam Summers
GOALS from Chris McPhee and Pierre Joseph-Dubois may not have
ended Weymouth's winless streak at the Wessex Stadium last night
but there were plenty of positives that the Terras could take
from an enthralling contest.
Former Weymouth skipper Simon Weatherstone put the visitors
in front after just 50 seconds but the hosts hit back with
McPhee equalising on 22 minutes.
The Terras should have been in front at half-time after failing
to convert a flurry of good opportunities but they did eventually
take the lead after a horrendous error by Town keeper Simon
Rayner, whose fluffed clearance handed Joseph-Dubois an easy
tap-in.
However, Adam Quinn, who hit the bar earlier in the encounter,
rescued a point for the league leaders by tapping home from
two yards with nine minutes remaining, much to the home side's
disappointment.
Weymouth made one change to the starting XI that began Saturday's
2-1 defeat against Kidderminster Harr-iers with Sam Cutler
replacing the injured Santos Gaia.
Kevin Sandwith came through a late fitness test to retain
his place while Ben Reiffer was drafted on to the bench. Stuart
Beavon and Adam Bygrave remained sidelined.
As well as Weatherstone, Crawley included fellow ex-Terra Bradley
Thomas in their squad. The centre-back was included on the bench
along with former AFC Bournemouth striker Steve Fletcher and
ex-Yeovil Town man Chris Giles, who have both been linked with
moves to the Wessex Stadium in the past.
With Weymouth having not tasted victory in their last six
games and Crawley on a five-match winning streak the last
thing the hosts wanted was to concede early.
However, the Terras' worst fears were realised when a lack
of communication in the opening minute saw Thomas Pinault's
header put Jamie Cook away down the right, who cut the ball
back for Weatherstone to slot home.
Ryan Williams replied by having a shot deflected wide and
from the resulting corner Scott Doe went agonisingly close
with a volley that fell just inches past the left post.
The hosts continued to advance and on eight minutes a dazzling
run and cross by Michael Malcolm set up Williams at the far
post whose weak header was blocked out for another corner.
The winger really should have done better with that opportunity
but he nearly made amends moments later when he shot powerfully
into the hands of Rayner from 15 yards.
The pace of Joseph-Dubois and Malcolm was clearly causing
Town problems but it was Cutler who had the next attempt,
cracking a fine shot from long range just over the bar.
Crawley replied with a similar effort from Danny Forrest
that flew wide before the Terras got a deserved leveller through
McPhee, who neatly took a ball from Cutler on his chest, rounded
Rayner and placed the ball into an empty net.
Town looked shell-shocked and just a minute later Stephen
Reed let fly with an effort from 25 yards that the visiting
keeper did well to tip over the bar.
A period of calm followed before Joseph-Dubois went close
again for the Terras with a shot on the turn from 12 yards
that rolled across Rayner's goal and just wide.
Malcolm then had a goal-bound effort blocked in the six-yard
box as the hosts upped the tempo again. Their relentless pressure
continued until the final minutes of the half when Reed had
a shot blocked by Rayner before Anton Robinson drove the rebound
off target.
Weymouth's failure to take their chances was nearly punished
shortly after the break when Quinn went close on three occasions.
His first attempt, a close range header, was acrobatically
pushed away by keeper Richard Barnard before he then saw a
powerful strike crack the top of the crossbar. The centre-back's
final effort saw him nod over at the far post from a corner.
It seemed like the Red Devils were beginning to take control
but an inexplicable error by Rayner on 54 minutes handed the
Terras the lead.
The keeper rushed out to make a routine clearance but he
totally missed the ball, allowing Joseph-Dubois to race past
him and strike into an empty goal.
Town responded by finding the net at the other end moments
later but substitute Fletcher's effort was ruled out for a
foul on Barnard in the build up.
Sandwith then had a free-kick saved by Rayner before Fletcher
nodded a great opportunity over the bar with 15 minutes remaining.
Town continued to push forward in search of an equaliser
and it came six minutes later when Fletcher rose well at the
far post and guided the ball down to Quinn who had the simple
task of tapping home from a couple of yards.
The play swung from end to end in the latter stages but it
was Cook who went closest to winning it for the visitors in
added-time when his low drive was well held by Barnard.
