Terras stop Brewers flow
By Nigel Biddlecombe
BATTLING Weymouth stopped a run of two successive defeats after
taking a hard-fought Blue Square Premier point at Burton.
Manager John Hollins was forced to make two changes for Saturday's
visit to the Pirelli Stadium - the injured pair of Stuart
Beavon and Stephen Reed being replaced by James Coutts and
Josh Webb.
Adam Bygrave continued in place of the suspended Cameron
Mawer.
The changes led to Hollins' men adopting a 4-5-1 formation
with Chris McPhee taking the lone striker role.
Within 10 minutes the home side had hit the woodwork twice
as Weymouth faced heavy early pressure.
Initially Jody Banim's corner was met by Keith Gilroy, but
the Albion man saw his header rebound off the crossbar.
The loose ball fell nicely to Michael Simpson whose effort was
cleared from the line by Scott Doe.
When Webb appeared to be harshly penalised Banim took the
free-kick from 35 yards and saw the ball come back off the
visitors' defensive wall and Weymouth were relieved to see
Gilroy's fierce shot come back off the woodwork before Bygrave
hacked clear.
It was not until the 23rd minute that Weymouth troubled the
home defence when Coutts and Ryan Williams combined well before
the ex-Aldershot man crossed into the danger area. However,
home skipper Darren Stride was on hand to clear.
Three minutes later Stride was in action at the other end
as he rose highest to meet Jake Buxton's free-kick, but Terras'
keeper Richard Barnard was able to save his powerful header.
Kevin Sandwith had Weymouth's first shot on target, after
27 minutes, but his sweetly hit free-kick cannoned off of
an upright after curling around Burton's defensive wall.
Weymouth surprised just about everyone when they took the
lead - with 34 minutes gone. Webb's pass inside found Michael
Malcolm with his back to the goal, but the Terras' striker's
touch was good enough to leave Stride flatfooted as he turned
and fired past Kevin Poole.
Burton came straight back at the visitors and levelled just
four minutes later. Gilroy made ground down the left before
finding Banim who played a delightful ball into the path of
Greg Pearson and the home man made no mistake from 20 yards.
Within two minutes of the restart McPhee, Malcolm and Coutts
were all involved in setting up Williams with a shooting opportunity,
but his effort flew harmlessly over the crossbar.
Gilroy struck a fierce shot into the side netting, but the
referee surprised everybody by awarding a corner, from which
ex-Terra John McGrath again found Gilroy who repeated the
feat.
Weymouth's injury problems increased when Bygrave suddenly
pulled up holding the back of his thigh and the defender appeared
in some strife as he was helped from the park with Sam Cutler
replacing him.
Barnard came to the rescue when he saved brilliantly from
Simpson, after Pearson had opened the Terras' defence with
a cleverly threaded through pass.
Although Coutts forced Poole to move smartly to hold on to
his header from another Sandwith free-kick, Barnard had to
react bravely to save at the feet of Adam Yates and Sandwith
produced an excellent tackle to deny Marc Goodfellow as Burton
strove to find the winning goal.
Substitute Jon Newby did get the ball into the net, for Albion,
but the effort was ruled out as the assistant referee spotted
Goodfellow in an offside position and Weymouth were able to
hold out for a well-earned point, thus recovering some of
the pride lost in last week's humbling at the hands of Histon.
