Beavon shines in City draw
By Adam Summers
WEYMOUTH striker Stuart Beavon earned huge praise from both
managers after scoring twice to grab his side a share of the
spoils at the Wessex Stadium last night.
The 24-year-old's brace helped the Terras fight back from
3-1 down and stun Bristol City, who had the likes of Lee Trundle,
Kevin Betsy and Steve Brooker all on show.
Weymouth boss John Hollins said: "We can take encouragement
from the way we played tonight. We never let our heads drop
and some of the moves we put together were excellent.
"We do need to learn not to get too excited when we go forward
at times but in terms of a result this is our best yet especially
after coming back from 2-0 down.
"Our best performance was against Bristol Rovers where
we played well in both halves and were a bit more composed
but overall I am delighted with how things are progressing."
As for Beavon's performance, Hollins added: "His touch
is as good as anybody's. He can hit balls with his left and
right foot and he works his socks off.
"He has also lost about a stone in weight and is looking
after himself better now. He really wants to win and to score,
and the other great thing about him is that he sees people
and has the vision to play them in."
City boss Gary Johnson echoed Hollins' sentiments. He said:
"I thought Weymouth did well. Beavon looked particularly
lively and they played some good football.
"I know Alan Lewer and John Hollins well and they make
a good management team, and I am sure they will get success.
"They have a lot of young, enthusiastic, and athletic
players and I think that is the way to get out of the Conference.
I wish them and the club all the best."
Stephen Henderson, who spent a spell on loan at Weymouth
last season and is constantly being linked with a return to
the Blue Square Premier club, began in goal for City and he
was soon in the thick of the action, tipping a fine shot from
Beavon around a post.
But it was the Robins that struck the first two blows and
they both came from corners with Jamie Wilson converting a
rebound on nine minutes and then Christian Ribero volleying
home a near post flick on by Steve Brooker ten minutes later.
However, Weymouth continued to come forward and sixty seconds
later they replied through a deflected free kick by Kevin
Sandwith that gave Henderson no chance.
Betsy then responded by going clean through on 27 minutes
to make it 3-1 but Weymouth still stayed focus and were rewarded
thanks to two clinical finishes from Beavon.
First the lively forward struck on 31 minutes after an uncharacteristic
mistake by Henderson before he then headed in a cross from
Sandwith five minutes later to level.
After the break Tristan Plummer rattled the crossbar for
City on 48 minutes but the Terras also carried on creating
chances with Santos Gaia and Chris McPhee both going close.
The hosts also managed to blood several youngsters in the
closing stages but there were no outings for Scott Doe and
new-signing Stephen Reed who both missed the game due to injury.
Doe has been linked with a move to Stevenage Borough but
Hollins has quashed those rumours. He also gave an update
on his hopes of bringing Henderson back.
He said: "The rumour concerning Scott is just something
that has appeared on the Internet but no one has spoken to
us.
"As for Henderson, Gary Johnson is still juggling with
things. If he can play at that standard then there is not
much we can do so we shall just have to wait and see.
"However, we are still looking to bring in one or two
more because although we have a lot of talent it is still
a small squad."
