Urchins in smash and grab
By Adam Summers
SUBSTITUTE Simon Parkers dramatic late winner silenced
the Wessex Stadium faithful as Weymouth paid the price for some
poor finishing in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.
The former Kettering Town forward came off the bench in added-time
and scored with his very first touch to send Hornchurch through
and leave the Terras in a state of shock.
However, it would have been a very different story had the
Blue Square Premier side taken a bounty of chances in the
first half.
Visiting keeper Dale Brightlys mishap handed Stuart
Beavon an easy opener on 12 minutes and the contest really
should have been over by half-time but Anton Robinson, Beavon,
Michael Malcolm and Chris McPhee were all guilty of missing
golden opportunities.
To compound the Terras wastefulness in front of goal
the Urchins levelled two minutes after the break through Kris
Lee, which set up a nerve-wracking second period that ended
with Weymouth failing to reach the first round proper for
the first time in four years.
On-field skipper Robinson replaced the suspended Stephen
Reed in the Terras midfield while Malcolm came in for
Pierre Joseph-Dubois up front.
Due to the nature of the competition the hosts were also
able to name seven substitutions so youngsters Ben Reiffer
and Jamie Frampton were included on the bench.
The Terras began in a pedestrian fashion and on 10 minutes
a poor headed back-pass by Scott Doe presented Lee with an
early chance. However, the tall forward took the ball too
wide of keeper Danny Knowles and when he crossed there was
no one in the box to make the most of it.
The away side looked well organised but just as they were
beginning to settle a slip by Brightly handed the Terras a
welcome lead.
There looked no danger when Ryan Williams cross came
in from the right but the visiting keeper lost his footing
and could only spill the ball into the path of Beavon who
side footed home from eight yards.
Dean Green fired a tame effort wide in response as the Urchins
began to enjoy a period of pressure but Weymouth defended
well and seemed happy to hit their opponents on the break.
Williams found the side netting with a fine drive after Cameron
Mawers cross from the right had caused mayhem in the
away sides box and when Robinson had a shot saved moments
later Beavon followed up with a header but again the effort
fell narrowly wide.
The Terras continued pressing and in the final stages of
the half they created several more golden opportunities.
Malcolm broke the offside trap and hit a post on 43 minutes
and when the ball ran loose McPhee had a great chance but
struck his rebound straight at Brightly.
The same two players were then involved again 60 seconds
later. This time Malcolm played a marvellous reverse ball
through to McPhee whose shot was brilliantly pushed wide by
the outstretched right hand of the Urchins keeper, who
was clearly looking to redeem himself after his earlier error.
The final effort of the period fell to Beavon after another
great break by Malcolm. But once again the finish lacked conviction
with his outside of the right-foot lob dropping wide of the
left post.
The Terras began sloppily in the second half and on 47 minutes
a shot by Elliot Styles deflected into the path of Lee who
slotted accurately past Knowles to level things up.
The Hornchurch fans were now in full voice and for the next
five minutes it was the away side who had their tails up as
they began mounting more pressure on the home defence.
Kevin Sandwith fired a free-kick from 30 yards just over
the bar to give the Terras some welcome relief and on 57 minutes
a superb flick on by Beavon gave Malcolm another opening but
his powerful shot went straight at Brightly.
James Coutts replaced Sam Cutler on 63 minutes and his first
contribution was to commit a foul on the edge of his own box.
That allowed Donny Barnard to curl a free-kick over the Weymouth
wall but Knowles dived to his right and pushed the ball to
safety.
Sandwith replied with a shot from 25 yards that flew just
past the right upright and Williams had a volley saved as
Weymouth began to go in search for a winner.
They then lost Mawer to injury but that allowed Joseph-Dubois
to enter the action as an extra attacker.
However, the Terras soon started running out of ideas and
just as the tie looked like it was heading for a replay the
visitors netted the winner deep into injury-time to snatch
a place in the next round.
A good move down the left ended with substitute Raphael Sylvester
playing in Parker and he applied a clinical finish to the
delight of the away fans behind the goal who went wild in
celebration as the Weymouth players dropped to their knees
in despair.
