Terras hopes dealt a lethal blow by Cards
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WOKING 3 WEYMOUTH 0 WEYMOUTH'S Setanta Shield hopes came to
an end last night when they lost 3-0 at the Kingfield Stadium
in the quarter-finals last night, although the scoreline did
flatter the home side.
The game started at a frenetic pace as a four-man Terras
move ended in Franklin Anzite hitting his cross into the hands
of Ross Worner.
The home keeper released the ball quickly to Liam Marum who
made ground before playing the ball into the path of Marvin
Morgan, which Jason Matthews did well to pluck from the striker's
foot.
Danny Bunce shot wide after Matt Pattison had put him through
on goal, while, at the other end,- Stuart Beavon saw his drive
cannon off a defender to safety.
Woking took the lead - in controversial fashion - on 11 minutes
when Bunce's pass fell kindly to Tom Hutchinson. The Cards'
skipper fired in a shot which appeared to have been cleared
off the line, only for the assistant referee to indicate a
goal.
Bradley Quamina shot wide when well placed for Woking while
Jack Compton hit two free-kicks over the crossbar for the
Terras before the home side doubled their lead a minute before
the interval.
Pattison found Matt Gray who played a terrific ball through
to Marum. The striker collected the ball and drove past Matthews'
despairing dive.
The second period was just 50 seconds old when Gray fired
over the bar, swiftly followed by Marvin Morgan shooting into
Matthews' hands from distance.
Weymouth - playing with just Beavon up front - had their
first shot on target in the 51st minute, but Worner held Anton
Robinson's effort at the second attempt.
The introduction of Swindon loanee Jake Hyde and Michael
Malcolm, a minute later, switching to three strikers, saw
Weymouth begin to look more dangerous.
Malcolm forced Hutchinson to head clear, Paulo Vernazza saw
his shot deflected and Hyde headed weakly into the keeper's
hands before Bunce hit the inside of a post, the ball rebounding
to safety.
Hyde, again, and Malcolm went close for the visitors, but
Woking wrapped the tie up in the 72nd minute. Hyde was harshly
adjudged to have fouled Jerome Maledon, but the Cards' man
was quickly on his feet to play the free-kick into the feet
of Morgan whose shot from a narrow angle beat Matthews.
As the tie drew to an end, Scott Doe, Hyde and Simon Weatherstone
all went close for the Terras, but they were unable to find
the net.
