Cards in smash and grab
By Adam Summers
WOKING staged a smash and grab victory at the Wessex Stadium
to stretch Weymouth's winless home run in the Blue Square
Premier to five games.
The Terras were far the better side for much of the contest
but they paid the price for not taking their chances on 80
minutes when Marvin Morgan made a great run and produced a
cool finish to beat keeper Jason Matthews.
Prior to that Gavin McCallum struck a post and Sido Jombarti
missed an open goal for the Terras who justifiably felt very
hard done by at the final whistle.
For the first time in a long while Weymouth boss Jason Tindall
was able to name an unchanged starting XI but he did make
two changes on the bench.
Midfielder Paolo Vernazza returned from four games out with
a foot injury while Conal Platt was also drafted into the
squad.
The men who dropped out were suspended defender Joel Kitamirike
and Danny Phillips.
The hosts made a fabulous start and had a great chance to open
the scoring after just 20 seconds when Trevor Challis' pass
down the left put Anton Robinson into the box.
The Weymouth skipper cut inside but took too much time to
pull the trigger and allowed Jay Gasson to get a challenge
in and clear.
The early work rate from the Terras was high and it was causing
problems for Woking. But the visitors did create an opening
on 11 minutes when Danny Bunce's free-kick found Tom Hutchinson
on the edge of the box.
The Cards' captain set up Adam Green with a shooting opportunity
but his effort with the outside of his left boot was saved
by Jason Matthews.
That was certainly a moment of concern for Weymouth but they
responded with a great counter attack moments later.
Doe put McCallum down the right channel and after the Canadian
had rounded Gasson he pulled the ball back across the box
towards Wilfried Domoraud, who looked certain to get a shot
in until Hutchinson made a fantastic intervention.
It was proving a very even contest and after Morgan and Bradley
Quamina had tried their luck from distance for Woking, Weymouth
put together another superb move on 29 minutes to test visiting
keeper Nick Gindre for the first time.
Domoraud and Coutts linked together superbly with a neat
give and go enabling the former to let fly from 25 yards but
his effort was pushed over the bar.
It was then McCallum's turn to go close moments later. The
Woking defence failed to clear their lines and when the ball
fell to the forward's feet he stabbed a shot against the outside
of a post. Suddenly the Cards were looking shaky and 60 seconds
later Gindre slipped trying to make a clearance presenting
a chance to Domoraud.
Unfortunately the Yeovil Town loanee's first touch let him
down and that allowed Gasson to get a block in and stop him
striking towards an unguarded net.
The Terras were clearly looking the more threatening side
and immediately after the restart McCallum made a break down
the right and pulled a cross back from the by-line which Gasson
could only half clear. The ball looped up in the air and when
Domoraud headed it down Coutts failed to make a clean connection
and volleyed wide.
Woking replied with some pressure of their own before Tindall
made a double switch on 55 minutes replacing Domoraud with
Stuart Beavon and McCallum with Michael Malcolm. Weymouth's
new strike pair certainly livened things up and gave the Cards'
defence something different to think about, and on 62 minutes
they linked well to present Jombarti with an open goal from
six yards out which he embarrassingly missed.
The midfielder failed to sort his feet out and sent his final
effort wide after Malcolm had latched on to Beavon's pass
and superbly cut inside Gasson before laying the ball across
the face of Gindre.
Platt came on for Coutts with 20 minutes to go but the next
chance fell to Woking when a misjudgement by Doe allowed Morgan
to break away.
The striker looked to be clean through but the impressive
Bondz Ngala came across and applied enough pressure to kill
the danger.
That seemed to buoy the visitors and with ten minutes remaining
they silenced the home fans by taking a shock lead against
the run of play.
Morgan lost his marker and made a fantastic diagonal run
which was found by Goma Lambu, and when he cut inside he slipped
the ball past Matthews and inside the near post. The hosts
tried to respond but Woking's resolute defence kept them at
bay, much to the disappointment of everyone in claret and
blue who left the ground stunned.
