Supersub Louis is Shield hero
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTH booked their place into the fifth round of the Setanda
Shield with a well deserved victory at the Raymond McEnhill
Stadium, where they fought back from a goal down.
It was the Terras who looked the stronger side in the opening
minutes as Conal Platt saw his effort saved and Stuart Beavon's
header flew just wide.
Although the visitors had a scare when Jason Matthews' clearance
from a weakly hit Nick Crittenden back pass rebounded from
Liam Feeney before rolling harmlessly out for a goal kick
- it was the Terras that looked likely to open the scoring.
Crittenden and Beavon combined to put Sido Jombarti through
on goal, only for home keeper Ryan Clarke to save well and
Scott Doe's headed effort from Paolo Vernazza's corner flew
narrowly over the bar to rest on the top of the netting.
Against the run of play it was the home side that broke the
deadlock in the 26th minute.
Andrew Sandell's long throw from the right-hand side was
flicked on by Aaron Cook.
The opportunity appeared to have gone as Wayne Turk and Feeney
got in each others way, before Feeney produced a brilliant overhead
kick to leave Matthews stranded.
Overcoming the shock of conceding such a goal Weymouth took
the game to the home side as Platt fashioned an opening for
Beavon whose shot was saved, the rebound fell to Jombarti
who hit the bar from six yards out.
Platt then saw a shot of his own well saved, before the Terras
won a corner in the 35th minute.
When Vernazza's kick fell to Beavon, the Terras striker hit
a terrific effort bringing a fine save from Clarke.
However, the rebound fell again to Jombarti, who hit a fierce
drive which looked to be goalbound until Matthew Robinson
made a great stop on the goal line.
Before the half ended Beavon saw another effort saved while
Jombarti fired over.
Although Matthews did well to save from Robinson at the start
of the second half, the Terras were well on top and it came
as no surprise when they levelled in the 51st minute.
Vernazza fed Crittenden whose pass found Danny Phillips in
space. The diminutive midfielder's cross shot was only half
cleared by Clarke leaving Justin Roberts to fire home from
six yards.
Weymouth had a couple of escapes over the following eight
minutes as ex-Terra Marvin Brown missed from three yards out
and Sandell fired into the side-netting.
Weymouth took the honours with a deciding goal in the 78th
minute. Crittenden found Vernazza whose flick into the danger
area was helped on by Beavon.
Substitute Jefferson Louis was the first to react and his
powerful header left Clarke helpless.
Louis and Beavon saw shots saved, while Matthews had to look
sharp to thwart Brown, but the home side did receive a let
off when Danni Clay cleared another headed effort from Louis
off the line.
