Weymouth cut down by ace Diamond Jackson
By Nigel Biddlecombe
DESPITE taking the lead at 2-1 Weymouth were undone by a Simeon
Jackson brace, which saw them leave Nene Park with no points.
Terras boss Jason Tindall made two changes from the side
that won on penalties in Tuesday night's FA Trophy second
round replay at Kidderminster with Scott Doe replacing the
suspended Kyle Critchell and Adam Gross taking the place of
Justin Roberts on the bench.
The match started disastrously for the Terras when Garry
Hill's men won a corner after just 35 seconds.
Marcus Kelly's in-swinging effort caused problems in the
visitors' defence and Jason Matthews could only palm the ball
out to Tom Shaw, who headed home from ten yards.
After this early shock the visitors began to settle, Michael
Malcolm having an effort held at the second attempt by debutant
keeper Dale Roberts, while the first of a serious of poor
decisions by referee Gibbs denied the Terras a penalty after
five minutes.
Stuart Beavon was fouled midway into the home side's half,
Paolo Vernazza stepped up to take the free-kick and his ball
into the penalty box was headed on by Beavon only for Chris
Hope to clear after initially controlling the ball with his
right hand.
Jon Challinor headed wide at the other end from Kelly's free-kick
while efforts from the same man, Jackson and Phil Gulliver were
all held comfortably by Matthews.
For Weymouth, Malcolm just failed to connect with Beavon's
flick on from Vernazza's long throw before the Terras levelled
the score in the 24th minute.
Beavon was fouled five yards outside the penalty area by
Curtis Osano, Vernazza's kick was met by Doe whose header
took a slight deflection en-route into the net.
The Weymouth defender saw another headed effort, this time
from a Vernazza corner, fly across the goal just two minutes
later and Danny Phillips was unable to take advantage of a
poor clearance by Roberts when his 40-yard effort was off
target.
Gulliver was on hand to scramble a Beavon shot clear after
the Terras' man had managed to get on the end of Malcolm's
cross, but it was the home side who finished the half in the
ascendancy.
Shaw brought a superb reaction save from Matthews after he
had latched onto a half clearance before Lee Tomlin hit an
upright just before the half time whistle.
Weymouth got the best possible start to the second period
when, in the 47th minute, Beavon got in front of his man to
nudge the ball on to Anton Robinson.
The Terras' skipper sent over a superb cross that completely
deceived Roberts, and Malcolm was on hand to tap in against
his former club.
Although Beavon and Malcolm both went close to adding to
the away side's lead, the hosts levelled the scores in the
61st minute when Andy Burgess sent a corner over from the
left which was flicked on by Challinor and met by Jackson,
who had the easiest of tasks to score.
Matthews did well to save at the feet of Shaw and the Terras
were afforded a further let off when ex-Weymouth man Dean
Howell got to the by-line and sent in a cross for Burgess,
but his header rebounded off the crossbar before being hacked
clear.
Weymouth lost Trevor Challis to a facial injury after 72
minutes and conceded the winning goal just 90 seconds later.
A visiting attack was broken up by Hope who thumped a long
ball forward. Michael Rankine found space to help the ball
on and Jackson pounced before sending his shot goal-wards.
Matthews managed to get a hand on the ball to slow it down,
but was unable to prevent it from rolling over the goal-line
as Gross and Joel Kitamirike attempted to clear.
Tindall sent West Ham loanee Bondz N'Gala up to add height
to the front line and the move almost paid off four minutes
into added time.
Robinson's ball into the six-yard area found N'Gala but the
youngster was unable to get the ball out from under his feet
to make the opportunity count, leaving the Terras to rue what
might have been.
