Terras in comfort zone at Long Lane
By Nigel Biddlecombe
Weymouth enjoyed a good workout at Long Lane last night against
their Sydenhams Wessex League hosts.
With a much changed side from the one that started against
AFC Bourne-mouth on Tuesday, Terras had all the early pressure
and goalkeeper Jon Stewart, was a virtual spectator.
The game was 14 minutes old before Ringwood's offside trap
was beaten by Gavin McCallum whose cross fell perfectly for
Gavin Tomlin to shoot, this bringing the first of many fine
saves from Ringwood's veteran keeper, Russell Goodman.
Tomlin was instrumental in freeing Stuart Doe down the left
and the ex-Swindon man's cross found Anton Robinson, but his
shot flew over the bar.
With Doe causing problems down the left flank the more experienced
Terras began to find gaps in the home defence with Robinson,
Conal Platt and Callum Crawley all going close.
Weymouth had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the
23rd minute when Tom Cheetham fouled McCallum in the penalty
area, but Tomlin's weak spot-kick effort was easily saved
by Goodman.
Platt, who was showing some terrific touches on the right flank
hit the right-hand upright in the 26th minute, from a free-kick,
and then saw a cross-shot rebound from the other post 13 minutes
later.
Between these incidents Goodman had been called upon to save
well from McCallum and Crawley.
The final action of the half saw the Terras hit the crossbar
when Tomlin and Platt combined well to provide McCallum with
the chance to fire in a drive.
Both sides made changes at the interval with Weymouth's line
up looking more familiar to their army of traveling supporters.
It took eight minute for the Terras to finally break the
deadlock when the referee awarded them a second penalty after
Paul Allsop was adjudged to have pulled down Tomlin. Stuart
Douglas stepped up and made no mistake with the spot-kick.
Danny Phillips, another of the Terras' half-time substitutes,
drew a fine save from the Wessex League outfit's substitute
keeper - Dean Lewis - just a minute later and Lewis was also
to save well from Douglas after a superb build up involving
Paulo Venazza.
Weymouth's second goal came after Platt had seen his shot
rebound from a defender and Douglas had made a hash of the
rebound as the ball fell to Stuart Beavon who fired home.
The Terras wrapped the clash up in the 63rd minute when Ashley
Vickers hit home an unstoppable drive from 30 yards out after
an excellent build up by the visitors.
Terras boss Jason Tindall said: "It was 3-0 but it could
have been a lot more. We missed a penalty, hit the post twice
and created a lot of other good opportunities but that was
not what this was about. It was about work rate and work ethic
and again it was there.
"I thought some of the lads looked a little tired because
we had a heavy training session this morning and at times
we perhaps overplayed a bit but on reflection over the first
two games everyone has come back fit and as long as we keep
working hard we will continue to stay on the right track."
Of the trialists, Tindall added: "They all did well.
Justin did very well at the back and they all worked hard.
I will be speaking to them over the weekend."
