Douglas grounds Harriers
By Adam Summers
SUBSTITUTE Stuart Douglas scrambled the ball home in added-time
as Weymouth took a huge step towards securing Blue Square
Premier survival at the Wessex Stadium.
Simon Russell silenced the home fans by putting Kidderminster
in front on 61 minutes but when Chris Blackburn levelled ten
minutes later the hosts sprung back to life and produced a
huge wave of pressure that eventually led to their last-gasp
winner.
The Terras, who entered the game unbeaten at home in their
previous three, made one change to their starting XI with
Marcus Browning replacing suspended midfielder Mark Convery,
who received a red card in the 2-1 win over Droylsden in midweek.
Browning was making his first appearance since injuring an
Achilles in the 6-0 defeat against Forest Green Rovers on
March 4.
Kidderminster's form was also good coming into the encounter,
having won their last three on their travels in an unbeaten
run of seven.
They included Yeovil Town loanee Darryl Knights in their
squad, who began on the bench.
Weymouth set a high tempo in the opening exchanges with James
Coutts having a shot deflected wide after a low cross from the
left in the very first minute.
The driving rain and swirling wind made playing possession
football very difficult and on ten minutes Russell nearly
made use of the conditions when he let fly with a 30-yarder
that curled just over the right-hand upright.
Matthew Barnes-Homer also had a pop for the visitors from
distance that flew wide before Trevor Challis swung in a fabulous
cross at the other end that Matt Bailey was inches away from
getting on the end of with his head.
Coutts then had a side-footed effort from 18 yards saved
by Harriers' keeper Chris MacKenzie after a fine lay off from
Stuart Beavon as Weymouth began to show more attacking intent.
Beavon was beginning to get more into the game and on 23
minutes his clever turn and shot set up a chance for Bailey
at the far post who slid in but could not make contact with
the goal gaping.
Blackburn was again having a fine game at the back for the
Terras and on 27 minutes he made a marvellous last-ditch tackle
to dispossess Iyseden Christie when the striker looked likely
to shoot after turning superbly in the box.
Beavon and Blackburn then tested MacKenzie with efforts as
the home side went on to finish the half the stronger side
with Browning beginning to orchestrate proceedings in midfield.
Russell was proving Kiddy's biggest threat and at the start
of the second half his clever movement and superb touch set
up Christie on 47 minutes but his half-volley flew high over
the Hollybush Stand.
Christie went closer moments later with a shot across the
face of the goal that went wide and that was followed by a
drive from Russell that went straight at keeper Stephen Henderson.
It was now the Harriers who were enjoying more of the possession
and on 61 minutes the Terras were punished for sitting off
when Barnes-Homer played in Russell who advanced into the
box and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the
net.
Nick Crittenden replaced Browning four minutes later and
on 71 minutes the hosts levelled when Blackburn rose high
and produced a superb header to turn in Weatherstone's corner.
Douglas came on for Bailey immediately after the goal and
then Beavon went close with a header that flew just wide.
Suddenly Weymouth were in the ascendancy and after Weather-stone
had a shot from distance held by MacKenzie, Beavon struck
an effort that was only stopped by a last-ditch block.
Kiddy were now on the ropes and the Terras continued to create
chances.
Beavon had a shot on the stretch saved by MacKenzie before
in added-time Douglas snatched the winner. The substitute,
who had just been booked for a rash challenge, bundled the
ball in from close range after MacKenzie had failed to deal
with Weatherstone's superb cross from a free-kick.
Kiddy tried to respond but time ran out as the Weymouth fans
celebrated their side's second win on the spin.
