Shay sorrow
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTH dropped into the Blue Square Premier relegation zone
following a 2-1 defeat at The Shay Stadium on Saturday.
The struggling Terras started with three new faces as manager
John Hollins gave debuts to keeper Stepen Henderson, defender
Moses Swaibu and striker Tony Bedeau.
Halifax were first to press, but Jon Shaw shot well over
the bar after just 50 seconds.
Play switched quickly to the other end as new loan signing
Bedeau and Stuart Beavon combined, providing Nick Crittenden
with a chance, but his effort was too high.
Both keepers saw action with Henderson saving well from Danny
Forrest, Simon Heslop and Shaw while home number one Adam
Legzdins spread himself cleverly to keep out Bedeau's close
range shot.
With 29 minutes gone Weymouth took the lead when Beavon played
Marcus Browning into space on the right.
As the home side hesitated, looking for an offside flag, Browning
hit his cross into the penalty area. Halifax made a hash of
clearing the ball and Anton Robinson was on hand to force the
ball home.
Bedeau, who was proving a handful on his Terras debut, hit
a shot straight at the keeper and saw another effort well
saved.
Tom Kearney's shot was deflected wide before the Terras had
a goal disallowed in the 40th minute when Beavon had evaded
Tom Clarke's weak challenge to fire home.
However, the referee pulled play back for a foul against
the Weymouth striker.
During the interval heavy rain began to sweep across the
ground making conditions - on an already poor surface - very
difficult.
Within three minutes of the second period Beavon was put
through by Robinson, but his shot was blocked and cleared.
Halifax levelled the scores in the 59th minute when Legzdins
gathered Jack Compton's corner and released Lewis Killeen
with a quick throw.
He fed Forrest whose pass found Andy Campbell, the ex-Middlesbrough
man having time to run on and fire past Henderson.
This success breathed new life into the Shaymen as Anthony
Griffith fired wide and Forrest shot well over the bar, before
the second goal arrived on 78 minutes.
Campbell made the most of a fortunate deflection to find
Heslop with a crossfield ball.
The midfielder ran unchallenged before releasing a fierce
30-yard strike that left Henderson with no chance.
With three minutes of stoppage time having been played Forrest
released Campbell whose run appeared to have been halted by
a Scott Doe tackle.
However, referee Quinn saw differently - awarding a penalty
and dismissing Doe.
Weymouth's frustration got the better of them, and both Simon
Weatherstone and Crittenden were cautioned for dissent.
When Shaw eventually took the kick Henderson dived to his
right to beat the effort out, but the referee's whistle blew
immediately to call the match to a halt and condemn the Terras
to another defeat.
