Tindall off as Spitfires shoot down the Terras
By Nigel Biddlecombe
TERRAS boss Jason Tindall was sent off as Weymouth lost their
final pre-season game to Blue Square South oufit Eastleigh
at the Silverlake Stadium on Saturday.
The Weymouth manager was bemused by referee Justin Amey's
decision.
He said: "In pre-season friendlies you expect the referee
to let the game flow and I don't think he did that.
"He made some strange decisions which I didn't agree
with, and then, with not long of the game to go he sent me
off. I was surprised he felt the need to do it.
"I was just getting frustrated with the decisions he
made throughout the game, for example, he booked Stuart Beavon
for dissent but then when one of their players swore at him
he only gave them a warning."
Ex-Terra Darren Wheeler helped set up the home side's winner
in the 62nd minute.
His free-kick from the left was allowed to go across the Weymouth
penalty area and found Andy Forbes who was on hand to drill
the ball home.
Despite playing some attractive football in their build up
play Weymouth were unable to break down the home defence.
As early as the sixth minute Marcus Browning sent a header over
the crossbar when it seemed odds on that he would score.
At the other end Steve Watts had a clear opportunity on the
stroke of half-time to open the scoring after he had been
allowed to run on to Danny Smith's long ball.
However he rushed his effort and Jason Matthews saved well.
Beavon became the first Terras to see a yellow card this
season when referee Amey cautioned him.
The booking was rather ironic as Amey had allowed several
challenges to go unpunished before the striker reacted.
The visitors had Nick Crittenden to thank in the 50th minute
when Ellis Green's corner was met by Watts and the Terras
man cleared from the goal-line.
Two minutes later Danny Phillip's quick free-kick put Crittenden
clear down the right who crossed for Ashley Vickers, but the
defender's header hit the crossbar.
Tindall brought on Jefferson Louis for his Weymouth debut
in the 68th minute and the striker went close on three occasions
in the space of four minutes.
His first effort was well saved by James Pullen in the Spitfires'
goal, while his second bounced over the crossbar.
The striker's third opportunity saw him miscue his shot which
flew harmlessly over the bar.
The Wessex chief was happy with his side's effort.
He said: "We created plenty of chances in the game and
on another day we probably would have won it 4-1.
"The goal we conceded was sloppy, but the most important
thing is that the boys have got some fitness under their belts
and will be ready for the start of the serious stuff."
Terras stopper Jon Stewart was missing from action on Saturday
and is likely to be out for up to three weeks after breaking
a knuckle in his hand.
Tindall added: "It's a big disappointment for us he's
done very well in the games he's played.
"I may have to look at getting a keeper in on loan until
Jon is back training."
