Terras keep up perfect start
By Ky Capel
WEYMOUTH kept up their perfect start to pre-season with another
3-0 victory, this time over Coca-Cola Championship outfit
Cardiff City last night at the Wessex Stadium.
The Terras looked impressive once again, albeit against a
young and somewhat inexperienced Cardiff line-up lacking the
firepower of their latest signing, a one Robbie Fowler.
Manager Jason Tindall though, was again pleased with the
performances and attitudes of his players. "The lads
have been working hard and they are getting their rewards.
They're also adapting very well to the style of play I want
to see.
"One of the most pleasing things is that we have been
keeping clean sheets and creating chances as well. We're looking
dangerous every time we go forward."
The fact that Tindall's men were only up against a youthful
Blues side didn't take the shine off the result.
"It was never going to be an easy game for us, their
players worked hard and the majority played the full 90 minutes.
"Regardless of what team we come up against, if we work
as hard as we can then we can beat anyone in my opinion. I've
got great belief in my players."
The home side took the lead as early as the eighth minute.
The ever-lively Stuart Beavon burst into the Cardiff box and
went down under the challenge of Darcy Blake. Referee Graham
Scott pointed to the spot immediately.
Gavin McCallum stepped up for the Terras but saw his initial
effort saved easily by Bluebirds' keeper Josh Magennis, but
fortunately for McCallum the rebound fell straight to him,
allowing the Canadian to fire home.
There were few clear-cut chances in the game, although, just
four minutes after McCallum's goal, Jamaica's Narada Bernard
left Magennis' crossbar shaking with a rasping drive from
the left edge of the penalty area.
The Wessex faithful had to wait until seven minutes after
the restart to see another goal. This time Beavon fed McCallum
out wide on the left, who then hit a low cross which Magennis
could only parry onto the feet of oncoming defender Bradley
Middleton who was rather unfortunate to see the ball cross
the line following his touch.
By the time the third Weymouth goal went in, the Terras had
a completely different line-up to the one that started the
game. Substitute Nick Crittenden, who was a doubt for the
game with illness, smacked in the third and final goal from
eight yards out after fellow substitute Danny Phillips' low
cross hit a Cardiff body.
One new face at the Wessex Stadium last night was defender
Joel Kitamirike. The 23-year-old, who has European experience
with Chelsea, is set for negotiations with Tindall today following
solid performances at Ringwood on Friday night and in last
night's encounter with the Welsh outfit.
Tindall added: "Joel done well when he came on. He's
not yet fully fit but I'm hoping to have a chat with him and
start negotiations. He's been at a few clubs, and has got
good experience behind him for a relatively young guy."
