Kingfield collapse
By Nigel Biddlecombe
Monday November 27th 2006
SHAUN Wilkinson received his marching orders as the Terras
slipped to their third successive league loss at the Kingfield
Stadium.
The midfielder, who started ahead of Simon Weatherstone,
was ordered off after picking up his second booking with just
four minutes remaining - a decision which summed up his side's
afternoon.
The visitors welcomed back Roy O'Brien from injury and there
were starts for Jason Tindall and Raphael Nade. Weatherstone
and Richard Logan began the match on the bench while Ashley
Vickers missed out through suspension.
A slow start by Weymouth gifted the initiative to the Cards,
who took the lead on 11 minutes when Giuseppe Sole curled
a splendid free-kick over the defensive wall and into the
top corner of the net leaving visiting stopper Arran Lee-Barrett
no chance.
The wet weather caused several players to lose their footing
early on and there was no doubt that the hosts adapted better
to the conditions.
Weymouth huffed and puffed but on 19 minutes they nearly
went two behind. Sole left the Terras' defence for dead but
Lee-Barrett came to the rescue with a fine save.
As the half went on the visitors began to come more into
the game and on 33 minutes they went close when Wayne Purser's
shot beat on-loan keeper Michael Poke before striking Tom
Hutchinson, who scrambled the ball clear.
But it was the Cards who ended up scoring next. Sole delivered
a corner from the left and Hutchinson rose unmarked to nod
past Lee-Barrett's flailing left hand.
To their credit Weymouth continued to battle and moments
before the break they nearly levelled through Nade. The ex-Woking
man climbed well to meet Simon Downer's cross from the right
but his header flew just wide.
It was important that the Terras started the second half
on top and that is exactly what they did. Wilkinson put Purser
free but Poke saved well at the expense of a corner. Downer
then directed a strong header on target, which the home keeper
did well to hold at the second attempt.
After the visitors' surge had petered out, Woking once again
began to take control with Craig McAllister going close on
two occasions. His first was smothered by Lee-Barrett and
his second flashed narrowly wide.
With Weymouth continuing to look for a lifeline the game
soon opened up with play swinging from end to end. Purser
went close for the Terras when Daniel Bunce cleared his effort
off the line.
It just did not look like it was going to be Weymouth's day
and on 63 minutes their hopes were dashed further when O'Brien
upended Goma Lambu in the box. McAllister's resulting spot-kick
was saved by Lee-Barrett but he immediately made amends, sliding
the ball home after two Weymouth defenders had collided trying
to clear the rebound.
The Terras were then dead and buried just three minutes later
when McAllister hit the bar and Lambu followed up and threaded
the ball through the legs of Lee-Barrett to make it 4-0.
The closing minutes saw the visitors produce their best football
with Poke being called upon to try and deal with efforts from
Wilkinson, Nade and Purser, who hit an upright.
Steven Ferguson wasted two good chances to grab Woking a
fifth before Wilkinson received his second yellow card with
four minutes remaining to make a bad day at the office for
the Terras even worse.
