Sorry Weymouth flatter to deceive
By Matt Pitman
Monday 22nd August 2005
HISTON'S quick-fire two goal blast condemned sorry Weymouth
to anothe Conference South defeat. Title favourites Terras
slipped to a second consecutive setback despite defender Roy
O'Brien giving them an interval lead.
The visitors looked on course for victory following, a commanding
first half at the Glassworld Stadium.
But Garry Hill's full-timers failed to kill off the Cambridgeshire
hosts and were caught cold twice in a four-minute spell after
the interval to leave Weymouth with just one win to their
name from their opening three fixtures.
While it's too early in the season for Terras fans to start
panicking, boss Hill has his work cut out to ensure this season
does not becoming another false dawn at the Wessex Stadium.
Anyone who thought turning full-time was a guarantee of success
has been proved wrong with Weymouth's last two performances.
The Radipole Lane outfit are flattering to deceive just as
they did in the opening weeks of last season under former
manager Steve Claridge.
Despite having an embarrassment of riches up front, Hill's
misfiring four strikers are yet to get on the scoresheet this
term despite having an array of chances.
This time around it was Chukki Eribenne and Dan Webb who
failed to stick the ball in the net as the Terras went down
to league new boys for the second time in four days.
Hill read the riot act after last week's loss at Eastleigh,
making six changes, and for 45 minutes the signs looked good.
Winger Steve Clark was often chief architect down the right
flank and he set up Webb who headed wide early on.
Midfielder Brian Dutton, handed his first start of the campaign,
was denied by a smart stop by Histon keeper Lance Key before
some decent work by Clark and Steve Tully set up Andy Harris
whose shot was blocked.
Weymouth, still smarting after that Eastleigh setback, continued
to boss proceedings and Chukki Eribenne nearly put them ahead
midway through the opening period. But the goal that looked
on the cards eventually arrived on 24
minutes courtesy of former Yeovil Town defender O'Brien.
Wilde was fouled by Histon defender Roscoe Hipperson and
from Harris' resulting free kick found the Irishman to bundle
home from close range. Moments later Eribenne fired over after
latching on to a long punt downfield by
keeper Aaron Lee-Barrett.
The one-way traffic continued with Webb again heading wide
from Tully's cross and the only surprise at the break was
how the visitors were not further ahead.
But whatever the home side were told at the interval it certainly
did the trick.
After Key denied Webb from doubling Weymouth's advantage,
Histon turned the tables on their big-spending visitors and
got back on terms after 53 minutes.
Terras skipper Matt Bound failed to clear fully, allowing
Adrian Cambridge to cross for Neil Andrews to plant his header
past Lee-Barrett from close range.
The equaliser rocked the away side who fell behind just four
minutes later. After Lee-Barrett turned Colin Vowden's header
behind, the defender made it second time lucky by nodding
the resulting corner into the net from six yards out.
Hill threw on substitutes Wayne Purser and Kirk Jackson in
a desperate bid to avoid defeat and the changes pepped up
the visitors who fashioned a host of openings to gain a point.
Webb saw a low drive turned around the post by Key and Duttori
had a couple of decent openings but the midfielder headed
over from promising positions seconds before the end.
