Stylish Terras back on song
By Matt Pitman
Monday 3rd April 2006
TERRIFIC Terras stormed back to the Conference South summit
with a crushing win over hapless Hayes at the Wessex Stadium.
Garry Hill's men returned to winning ways netting five times
for the first time this term and move two points ahead of
nearest rivals St Albans City in the process.
Skipper Matt Bound and loan striker Raphael Nade each scored
twice with Chukki Eribenne also on target.
Following three disappointing results in succession, pressure
was mounting on Weymouth to produce the goods.
And they responded in style to demolish the Middlesex visitors
who briefly rallied through Kieran Knight's penalty having
been 2-0 down at the break.
Captain Bound settled the Terras nerves with his second spot
kick of the game before Nade and Eribenne ensured three much-needed
points.
The comprehensive victory vindicated Hill's decision to make
four changes from the side beaten at Welling.
He dropped keeper Jason Matthews, whose mistake gifted the
Wings their winner at Park View Road last week, and his replacement
Aaron Lee-Barrett stepped-up to produce a confident display.
Eribenne, John McGrath and Simon Downer also got the nod
over Kirk Jackson, Shaun Wilkinson and the ill Steve Tully.
Determined Weymouth wasted little time in pushing forward
and grabbed the lead from Downer's tenth minute cross into
the box.
Hayes defender Karleigh Osborne made a hash of his attempted
clearance as the ball bounced up to strike him on the arm.
Referee John Flynn pointed to the spot, the first of three
penalties awarded by the Calne official, following assistant
Stuart Gemmell's intervention.
Skipper Bound confidently strode up and lashed home low to
keeper Kevin Davies's left and into the bottom corner of the
net.
The perfect start nearly got even better as McGrath's volley
went close, then Nade hammered a volley into Davies's side-netting.
Eribenne and Elam soon combined to release Ben Smith whose
goalbound drive was blocked by last man Orlando Jeffrey.
Elam seized on the loose ball and even though he failed to
make a clean contact, Davies needed two attempts to gather
the shot.
The dangerous crosses from Elam and Andy Harris were wreaking
havoc in the away side's defence and Weymouth's superiority
earned them a second goal on 24 minutes.
After Elam was fouled by former Terra Mark Boyce down the
right, Harris's free kick picked out Nade and the Frenchman
superbly volleyed home from close range.
Nade and Eribenne were both inches away from capitalising
on further excellent crosses by Elam and Harris before Osborne
survived another penalty shout for handball.
Weymouth were in control at this point but a five-minute
blip either side of the break almost cost them dear.
Lee-Barrett was forced to save Kevin Warner's dipping volley,
then watched Jeffrey waste a superb opportunity by heading
over from close range right on half-time.
Hayes, who hardly featured as an attacking force, hauled
themselves back into the contest six minutes after the interval.
Striker Warner latched on to substitute Chris Elsegood's
lofted pass and after wriggling into the area, collapsed to
the turf under McGrath's challenge.
Referee Flynn pointed to the spot and Knight did the rest
from the penalty.
The setback only served to fire Weymouth up who immediately
hit the bar through Elam's volley before restoring their two-goal
advantage.
Elam won another penalty after being sent tumbling in the
area by Davies following a blistering run down the right.
Bound went for placement over power to easily beat the Hayes
keeper who was booked for his foul on Elam.
Nade and Jeffrey each escaped with just a ticking off following
a needless shoving match before the Terras' loan star grabbed
his second and Weymouth's fourth on 63 minutes.
McGrath and Trevor Challis combined down the left for the
latter to find Nade at the near post who beat marker Robbie
Williams to the cross and volleyed past Davles.
The Carlisle United asset was withdrawn by Hill with 15 minutes
left and watched from the dug out as Eribenne latched on to
Smith's pass to race through and make it 5-1.
