Purser on target for seven-up Weymouth
By Matt Pitman
WAYNE Purser netted his first goals for Weymouth as the Terras
romped to another crushing pre season win last night.
The striker struck twice as Garry Hill's side swept aside
Combined Counties League minnows Godalming Town 7-0 in their
penultimate warm up clash.
The success, hot on the heels of last week's nine goal success
at Portland
United, saw another classy display of finishing by the Dorset
side.
Summer signing Purser, Kirk Jackson, Chukki Eribenne, Roy
O'Brien, Adam Wilde and Tony Taggart were all on target in
Surrey. And boss Hill says the two recent goal-feasts have
been perfect preparation for the start of the Conference
South season on August 13.
He said: "Some people can't wait until Christmas but
I can't wait until the start of the season - I now just want
to get out there against Havant and Waterlooville.
"We're at a stage where we're ready to go and look really
sharp and together as a squad.
"Scoring goals is always good for confidence and that's
what the last two games have given us.
"It was nice that Wayne scored his first goals for the
club, as did Tony Taggart, because players always want to
get off the mark early in their career at a new club.
`Another plus point is that we've come out of the game without
any injury problems which is good news." Winger Darren
Wheeler, who played 45 minutes against his ex-club Godalming,
had a hand in setting up the visitors' opener on two minutes
when Jackson headed home a Steve Clark cross.
Weymouth were always in control but it took another half-hour
before they doubled their lead.
Eribenne drove past home keeper Danny Wheeler after a scintillating
run and cross by Clark.
The result was put beyond doubt in first half stoppage time
when O'Brien bundled home from close range after Danny Wheeler
made a hash of Shaun Wilkinson's corner.
Hill made wholesale changes at the break but that didn't
stop the goals flowing for the full-timers.
The action was barely underway again when substitutes Dan
Webb and Purser combined for the latter to round replacement
keeper Shaun Brooks for 4-0.
And the nippy former Peterborough United ace netted again
on 48 minutes, firing home from Wilde's neat lay-off.
The Terras made it six just five minutes later when Taggartfound
Wilde who twisted past three defenders before slotting home.
Despite further chances, Weymouth had to wait until two minutes
before time to complete the scoring when some near control
by Purser released Taggart to crash past Brooks.
Hill added: "The game was similar to the friendly up
at Portland in many ways but despite the result I'm not getting
carried away with the last couple of scorelines.
"What matters is that we perform when the league season
starts and I'm pretty certain we're at a stage now where we're
ready to go."
