Chukki's a dazzler for Terras
By Matt Pitman

Monday 29th August 2005

CLINICAL Weymouth answered boss Garry Hill's call for better finishing in spectacular style against

The buoyant Terras smashed four stunning goals without reply at the Wessex Stadium to end a run of two straight Conference South defeats.

Andy Harris, Chukki Eribenne, Tony Taggart and Wayne Purser each netted to get home fans smiling again and leave the lacklustre Robins grounded without a win this term.

The pre-season title favourites finally started living up to their tag as they produced plenty of bright attacking football in the resort sunshine.

Manager Hill's decision to play three strikers - Purser, Eribenne and Dan Webb - paid off as Weymouth ran riot at the Radipole Lane venue.

Summer signing Purser rounded off a great afternoon for the home side, netting his first league goal for his new club.

But it was Eribenne who deservedly took the plaudits, capping a dazzling display of strength and determination with a blistering 25-yard drive to make it 2-0 early on.

The former Havant and Waterlooville star, barracked by sections of the Wessex Stadium crowd in the past, was a revelation and enjoyed arguably his best performance since joining the Terras.

Hill's decision to field three attackers, who combined to miss a glut of chances in previous defeats, paid off from the start.

The hosts looked sharp and eager to get those setbacks at Eastleigh and Histon out of their system.

And it took just five minutes for them to take the lead following a superb sweeping move started by striker Purser.

The former Peterborough star combined with Steve Tully and Brian Dutton to set up Andy Harris 25-yards out.

And the ex-Liverpool trainee, who netted on the opening day against Havant, notched again with an excellent low drive which found the net with the aid of
Robins' keeper Stuart Searle's right hand post.

Carshalton failed to seriously test recalled Terras keeper Jason Matthews over the course of the 90 minutes, although Stuart Booth's cross did have the goalie
scrambling early on.

It was no surprise when the Terras increased their lead on 17 minutes, with another cracking individual effort.

This time Eribenne fashioned something out of nothing, picking up possession 30 yards from goal before spinning and curling an unstoppable shot into Searle's top left hand corner.

Danny Hunt then wasted a decent chance to pull one back for the Robins, driving over from close range after Booth's long diagonal pass.

But with Harris snapping away in midfield and Tully impressing down the right flank, more goals looked on the cards for Weymouth.

The home side were forced to make a change on the half hour when midfielder Brian Dutton took a knock on the knee and his replacement, Richie Hanlon, was
inches away from heading home Taggart's testing left wing cross moments later.

Harris, whose energy in the centre of the park has given the Terras an added dimension, fizzed a long-range drive just wide as the interval drew closer.

But despite the commanding lead, there were a few warning signs from the visitors and it took good defending by Tully to nick the ball off Thomas Carter's toes as he raced through.

Weymouth lost defender Roy O'Brien to injury seconds after the restart, the defender suffered concussion after being clattered by Matthews as the keeper rushed from goal to punch clear.

With no defender on the bench, Harris moved into the rearguard and the disruption caused Hill's side to lose their way for a short while after the enforced change.

Veli Hakki nearly pulled one back for Carshalton when Carter's corner caused confusion in the home defence, but Tully was on hand to block six yards out.

Just as it looked like a nervy last half hour might be on the cards, the Terras grabbed a -third to make the points safe.

Purser was bundled over by , giant defender Ellis Hooper and Taggart curled home a 25-yard left-footed free kick, squirming under the body of overworked
keeper Searle.

Shaun Carey, Webb, Eribenne and Adam Wilde all had decent opportunities to make it even worse for the visitors before Purser wrapped things up with eight minutes left.

Defender Trevor Challis cleverly switched play to Wilde wide on the right who skipped down the wing, ignored Tullys dummy run, and sent over a swirling left-
footed cross.

His ball found Taggart at the far post who knocked back across goal for Purser to turn in from close range to mark his first league goal since his summer move from Peterborough.

• A minute's silence was held before the game in memory of cancer victim Oakley Waterman (6), the son of Terras defender Dave Waterman.
