Hill in stinging attack on Bees and referee
By Matt Pitman
Wednesday 27tth July 2005
GARRY Hill hit out at top referee Dermot Gallagher following
Weymouth's hard-fought friendly defeat to Brentford last night.
The Terras boss accused the Bees of `over the top' tackling
in their 1-0 warm-up success at the Wessex Stadium.
And Hill reckons the Premiership official failed to clamp
down on the Coca Cola League One outfit for whom Ryan Peters
netted a first half winner.
He told Echosport: "There were a few tackles out there
tonight from Brentford which were a bit naughty and left a
lot to be desired considering it was a friendly.
"I realise the conditions were not helpful, what with
all the rain, but the way our winger Steve Clark was dealt
with in particular at times was pretty unreasonable.
"What suprises me most is that Dermot Gallagher was
in charge tonight who is usually a top class standard official.
"But he seemed to let Brentford get away with a few
things which should have been stamped out early.
"Luckily we haven't got any major injuries but some
of those challenges were pretty cynical and should have been
dealt with."
Chances were few and far between in a hard-fought battle
last night.
Terras keeper Aaron Lee-Barratt saved well from visiting
striker Scott Fitzgerald
before Peters netted the only goal on 40 minutes.
The winger struck after Jay Tabb got in behind marker Steve
Tully and hit the post. Weymouth's best chance to equalise
came on the hour when when striker Wayne Purser was denied
by keeper Clarke Masters from close range.
The rebound fell invitingly for Richie Hanlon but the midfielder
blazed over from 12 yards.
The hosts were grateful to some alert defending by Roy O'Brien
to prevent a Bees second late on. Substitute Ryan Watts prodded
goalwards after rounding Tully and Lee-Barratt but O'Brien
got back in the nick of time to clear off the line.
Hill added: "We set a high standard against Southampton
last week and while we probably didn't match that tonight,
it was another decent work out.
"We conceded another bad goal though which is concerning
and is something that needs to be put right.
"At the other end, we're starting to look a bit sharper
and looked quite dangerous
against a well-drilled defence."
FAYE Harrison was last night appointed a director
of Weymouth Football Club.
Harrison, daughter of owner and chairman Martyn, officially
takes up the role
after celebrating her 18th birthday yesterday.
The announcement was made by chief executive Gary Calder
during a party for
Faye and friends following last night's match.
FORMER Wimbledon manager Stuart Murdoch has taken
up a role as goalkeeping coach at the Wessex Stadium.
Murdoch, who also works with AFC Bournemouth on a similar
basis, has joined the Terras in a part-time capacity.
Boss Garry Hill said: "Stuart has joined us on a part-time
basis and is here purely to help us out on the goalkeeping
side on things.
"It is important our first team keepers Aaron Lee-Barrett
and Jason Matthews
receive specialist coaching and Stuart's appointment will
allow that to happen."
