Jackson returns to give Terras a lift
by David Swain
Wednesday 16th March 2005
KIRK Jackson made a goalscoring return after suspension
for the Terras as they strengthened their hold on this season's
Sammy McGowan Cup competition with victory over the holders
at the Wessex Stadium last night.
The former Yeovil attacker, who has missed the Terras last two
games after being sent off for dissent in a 3-2 defeat at Redbridge,
warmed up for his Nationwide Conference South return at home
to Newport County when he ended Wessex League Wimborne's chances
with the Terras third goal after 72 minutes.
The Terras, with Gary Borthwick and Dave Kiteley in charge,
were still absorbing the news of manager Steye Johnson's sudden
demise imparted by Martyn Harrison shortly before kick-off ~
when the Magpies stunned them further by taking a 28th minute
lead.
Magpies Gareth Barnes smashed a superb first-time volley
past Francisco Ramos after a sparkling attack down the left
flank.
But the Terras rallied to make and miss several good chances
before lan Hutchinson got them back on terms two minutes before
the break.
He chased an incisive through ball from John Waldock and
slotted home after a fumble by visitor's keeper Stewart Kearns.
Darren Wheeler then put the Terras in front on 50 minutes,
showing good pace and a neat finish to make the most of another
telling through ball.
Then Jackson rounded off the scoring when he pounced to convert
from close range after a header from Ludo Cadima had rebounded
back off the Wimborne crossbar.
Jackson and Wheeler both missed chances to increase the tally
as the home side dominated the closing stages but Kiteley
was pleased with the Terras' overall performance
"With what happened before the game it could have all
gone pearshaped when they scored early on," said Kiteley.
"But the players just got on with the job in a professional
manner and it turned out to be a very good work-out against
a well organised Wimborne side who are no mugs."
He said Bristol City trialist Tom Osman, who came on as a
second half substitute, had been invited to join the Terras
for training next week.
"He looked a little bit lightweight for the first team
just yet, but he definitely has something about him,"
he added.
